Album Notes
Personnel includes: Dr. John (vocals, piano, percussion); Harold Battiste (arranger).Originally released on Atco (33-234).Includes reissue liner notes by Richie Unterberger.Personnel: Dr. John (vocals, keyboards).Liner Note Author: Richie Unterberger.Arranger: Harold Battiste, Jr.New Orleans-born pianist Mac Rebennack had been making a living as a Los Angeles session musician for years before he adopted the persona of Dr. John, a name taken from a 19th-century witch doctor. Under that guise, he crafted a sound that mixed the old world of New Orleans (the tribal rhythms of the Mardi Gras Indians, second-line grooves, swamp blues) with the new musical world of 1968 (funk, R&B, rock, free jazz). The resulting gumbo bears a deep, dark, mysterious flavor full of voodoo mysticism and ancient rites.GRIS-GRIS would have made the perfect soundtrack for a horror movie set in New Orleans, as Dr. John's raspy murmur weaves a hypnotic spell atop a bed of exotic-sounding string instruments, ominous keyboards, primal percussion stomps, and spooky background vocal chants. Few could have predicted that this fearsome medicine man would eventually metamorphose into a charming, accessible rock star.

A Little Disappointing

Created: 01/01/11
I remember hearing this album back in the 1968 when it was first released. It seemed so mystical. The chanting and Cajun voodoo rhythms were enticing. But for the most part this album has not aged well, most of the tracks sound a little hokey and the chants sound like something out of a comedy skit. There are three tracks that still have a little relevance. The title track Gris-Gris still works and Mama Roux is a funky groove that simmers with a little Cajun flavor. I Walk On Gilded Splinters is somewhat alluring as it drifts along in a somewhat alluring trancelike state. Overall Gris-Gris was not quite the heavy I remembered.

Dr. John The Night Tripper 'Gris-gris'

Created: 05/06/10
I had this on a record album back in 1972 or 1973 and sold it. I was never able to get it again. A rare and classic treat, Dr. John The Night Tripper. I have several other Dr. John CDs but none like the New Orleans Funk of this album. All Dr. John fans should have this. I've noticed another available CD called the Best of Dr. John The Night Tripper and I will be looking into that. So Gris-gris, walk on guilded splinters.

Gris Gris - Dr. John

Created: 02/03/08
I have a collection of just about everything that Dr. John has recorded...He's my very favorite piano Player.
After checking out Ebay for Dr. John albums, I was happy to find that 2 of his very early albums (Gris-Gris & Remedies) were finally available on CD.
I couldn't wait to hear them when they arrived by mail....and I love them both !!!!! Great CD's !!!!! And now my collection is complete.
Neither of these CD's are readily available at record stores and I'm very glad to complete my Dr. John collection at last.
