Although I've taken the time to try & see some funny Adam Sandler films with friends, I'd have to say (hands down) that this was one of his flatter films, since it was that Jack and Jill (2011) wasn't really that funny due to the fact that the female sister character really made you uncomfortable & was painful to watch. Although I did find myself laughing at both films, I'd have to say I wouldn't waste my time watching Jack and Jill again, but I certainly enjoyed Grown Ups the second time.

Firstly, I'm not really into criticizing films just for the fun of it, but this film actually needs to be beat up a bit. All the characters were a bit more phoney overblown representations of themselves in real life, including Adam Sandler who actually just acted like a putz throughout the film. I actually think that Adam Sandler called up all the people and told them that he was going to make a film about grown up people acting like children and that he would spend about 80 million dollars doing so; take a vacation with his favorite actors & just tell Dennis Dugan (the director) that he would take 5 characters and run around his camera while filming & act stupid. Some might disagree with this, but I'd have to say overall that Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, David Spade & Kevin James are actually an excellent choice for a main cast for a comedy. But that's also pretty much what makes the film so frustrating since absolutely nothing is done with them. Not only are the jokes weak and almost maddeningly predictable, the actors don't even get an actual story to work with. You can literally just erase main characters from this movie & it wouldn't affect the proceedings at all.

Seriously, there are a few really funny things that happened in the film that caught my attention but mostly, the whole film was centered around one line quips that just are not even funny. Not to mention the fact that, out of nowhere comes not even half-baked melodrama with each couple overcoming some stupid problem. Each issue that is brought up and resolved within 5 minutes & then never mentioned again! Why bother even bringing it up in the first place if it serves no purpose in the film. Who cares! Are we really supposed to care for these phoney, made up characters? I don't think so. The women characters in the film do nothing notable & are interchangeable & look as bored as their audience watching these 5 idiots try & make the lamest stuff funny. I won't mention the women by name to spare them of unfair blame. When they finally introduce antagonists into the movie (almost an hour in), it's like Sandler & friends decided it as an after thought. The climax of the film ends in some kind of basketball square-off between two groups of high school friends while the spectators, all back country rednecks wearing US flag shirts, cheer on. The whole movie is like an SNL reunion of mostly has been actors. Steve Buscemi makes a fool out of himself for a laugh. Last, but not least, is the acting duo of Spade and Schneider. They are so bad that they make the acting in "Troll 2" look Oscar worthy. Both should have to give up their Screen Actor's Guild cards for this. I want to hurl just thinking of their acting again. They are worse than amateurs. I think both of them must be hiding a dark secret of Sandlers; otherwise why are they here? I have an idea for Adam Sandler's next movie, call it "Train Wreck". This way when it is released no one will be disappointed when it sucks.

Just because you grow older doesn’t mean you have to grow up! Comedy superstars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider are at their hilarious and outrageous best playing childhood friends who reunite one holiday weekend to relive the good old days. It doesn’t matter that these five guys are now respectable businessmen, husbands and fathers. Once they get back together, nothing is going to stop these kids-at-heart from having the time of their adult lives. From the people who brought you Click, comes this hilarious and heartwarming film that proves men will be boys.

Worth Watching

Created: 05/03/11
A movie about a group of young boys and their relationship with their basketball coach and how they all reunite after many many years apart for his funeral. Some try to down play their success while others try to hide their unemployment with false stories of success. Some are stay at home husbands; while some prefer the company of much older women. This movie puts a funny twist on how some men even when they hold the title of "grown up" still are nothing more than big kids.
