Movie synopsis

By all rights, THE HANGOVER should have been a minor success that did satisfactory box office and lived on through beer-laden guys’ night viewings. The marquee boasts no big-name stars, and the premise--an alcohol-soaked bachelor party--seems tried and tired. But OLD SCHOOL director Todd Phillips’s boys-night-out comedy is a blockbuster revelation that revels in raunchy jokes and happily leaves the border of propriety behind. Groom-to-be Doug (Justin Bartha, NATIONAL TREASURE) has planned an epic night in Las Vegas with his two best friends, Phil (Bradley Cooper, YES MAN) and Stu (Ed Helms, THE OFFICE), and his fiancée's awkward brother, Alan (comedian Zach Galifianakis). But it turns out that they partied a little too hard: Phil, Stu, and Alan wake up the next morning with a missing groom, a tiger in the hotel-room bathroom, a baby in the closet, and no memory of the night before. Though the funny script glories in the gutter, the credit for most of the film’s laughs goes to the excellent cast. Phillips’s OLD SCHOOL had Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, and Luke Wilson, but even though THE HANGOVER’s cast members aren’t A-listers (yet), they’re just as talented. Cooper and Helms have gotten laughs in WEDDING CRASHERS and THE OFFICE, respectively, but the perfectly awkward Galifianakis is a hilarious surprise. THE HANGOVER is sure to please everyone in the audience, except the easily offended who will cringe from the film’s foul first moments to its over-the-top closing credits.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"THE HANGOVER is surprisingly clever as well as R-rated rowdy....Helmoer Todd Phillips grabs attention right from the get-go with an edgy-funny prologue that triggers an extended flashback."
Variety - Joe Leydon (05/24/2009)

"[A] piercingly funny, twisted 'whatever-happens-in-Vegas' caper....It's the deadpan comic timing of director Phillips and his terrific cast that's ultimately responsible for THE HANGOVER's lasting effect."
Hollywood Reporter - Michael Rechtshaffen (05/24/2009)

4 stars out of 5 -- "Todd Phillips has directed a nasty, brutish and brilliant comedy for louts..."
Box Office - Amy Nicholson (05/29/2009)

"Zach Galifianakis makes blinkered idiocy a cartoon rush..." -- Grade: B
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (06/12/2009)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "THE HANGOVER is a funny movie, flat out, all the way through....Here is a movie that deserves every letter of its R rating."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (06/03/2009)

"What makes HANGOVER so funny is watching these hapless fools trying to piece together a lost night, forensic clue by forensic clue
Washington Post (06/05/2009)

3 stars out of 4 -- "THE HANGOVER proves that high concept, done right, can work deliriously well. Its simple premise, executed via an off-kilter narrative structure, is made even more absurdly funny by an offbeat cast."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (06/05/2009)

"[T]here is a sort of perverse brilliance or brilliant perverseness to be found in this story of a bachelor party gone terribly wrong."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (06/05/2009)

"[O]ften very funny. This is partly thanks to the three principal actors, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis, who incarnate familiar masculine stereotypes in ways that manage to be moderately fresh as well as soothingly familiar."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (06/05/2009)

"There's definite chemistry there between Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis. The script is a dream for a comedic actor, filled with opportunities for all three leads to shine, and all three do."
Movieline - Movieline Critic (06/03/2009)

4 stars out of 4 -- "[A] very funny and fast-paced detective story."
Premiere - Rob Calvert (06/04/2009)

4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here's oodles of verbal humour...Jon Lucas and Scott Moore's inventively profane script missing few opportunities to tickle the funny bone as it charts the deranged aftermath of the ultimate Sin City stag night.
Total Film - Neil Smith (06/09/2009)

Ridiculous!!

This ovie is insane. It's absolutely RIDICULOUS how funny it is. The cast is top of the line and hilarious through the entire movie.
Even people I thought were NOT gonna be funny, were funny. It's such an offset cast of people who, at first seem like they won't be
able to work a joke together but pull it off. I have nothing bad to sy about this movie other than Tyson could have had more jokes.
I would put this movie in the same class as "Step Brothers" or even a Seth Rogen movie, but is probably in a league all it's own.

I could literally watch this movie every day until I die. It's that funny.

Basically if you like to laugh until you cry, then watch this movie over and over again. This movie WILL go down as one of
the funniest movies of all time. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Heather Graham, Ken Jeong,
Rachael Harris, Mike Tyson, Mike Epps, and Rob Riggle have made one of the funniest, gut busting comedies of all time.

What a funny movie

Created: 15/12/09
This movie had me rolling on the floor, it's that funny.

It boasts no big name actors and I was very skeptical of it when I first got the movie, but after only a few minutes watching it I knew I had not wasted my money.

The movie is about 4 guys who head to Las Vegas for a one night bachelor party, they wake up the next morning with no memory of the night before and the groom is missing. They then try to piece together what happened last night and where the groom is.

The cast of Heather Graham, Jeffrey Tambor, Justin Bartha, Rachel Harris, and Rob Riggle work very well together and the plot, although an old one, is still well written. (Former boxer Mike Tyson has a very small roll in this as well).

Get this movie, you will be glad you did.

Great movie, fun added features, but...

Created: 13/01/11
I love The Hangover, it cracks me up. This dvd set comes with two versions, original and uncut version, and a bunch of fun extra features. Thats all fine and good.

The reason that I gave this a lower rating is this:I purchased this dvd for the sole reason that it came with a digital copy that I could watch on my iphone or have on the computer. This is stated on the front cover and is also printed on the dvd itself. As far as I can tell you can't get a digital copy through itunes or anywhere else on the web. When I opened the box there was no activation code like there was supposed to be. When I contacted WB I was told the offer had expired, they weren't going to do anything about it, too bad so sad. So despite it being part of the extra features I had paid for, they weren't going to honor it.

It honestly astounds me that studios are so shocked and appalled that people are ripping and downloading movies and music illegally, when many of them are still making it difficult or even impossible to get a digital copy, which is what people want now days! I tried to get the digital copy through WB. This was actually my second copy of the movie trying to get the digital version, the first didn't work for other reasons (thankfully it was before christmas so I regifted it lol). In the end I used RipIt to make a copy for my iphone. Quick, easy, done.

Funniest Movie!!! Laughed HARD!!!

Created: 13/01/10
It is the funniest movie I've seen in years! I rented and had to buy it. The extended version is more of a value for me since you it comes with the digital version as well. Additionally it has more pictures of the lost camera (if you haven't seen this movie you have no personality) and so much more. I just had to own it! It makes me laugh just to think of the morning scene...I mean, come on....a bathtub with blow up girl AND pig...biggest beer can pyramid ever...guy passed out face first on tile missing a tooth with a chicken walking around in background...and don't forget "Mike's" tiger...and a baby...and nobody can remember what happened!!! VEGAS, gotta love it! I don't drink, but I love The Hangover!
