Album Notes
The Streets (Producer): Mike Skinner (vocals).Additional personnel: Leo The Lion, Ny, Ted Mayhem, The Wayne Hart Singers, Example, Teddy Mitchell, Jackie Rawe, Laura Vane (vocals); Morgan Nicholls (guitar); Eddie Jenkins (keyboards); Johnny Drum Machine (drums). As much as Mike Skinner's first two albums chronicled the life of a young working-class British lad struggling to make it in contemporary England, the Streets' third album THE HARDEST WAY TO MAKE AN EASY LIVING is a quasi-concept album about the vagaries of fame and fortune. Rather than rapping about pints, geezers, and Playstations, Skinner's conversational, slang-laden lyrics here are about girls who wouldn't look twice at him before he was a star (the single "When You Wasn't Famous"), the difficulties of coming up with new material ("The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living"), and record company battles ("Fake Streets Hats"). A mere three strong albums into his career, Skinner's Everyman delivery and stripped-down, basement beats have come to exemplify British hip-hop.

Editorial Reviews
4 stars out of 5 -- [T]his is a fast-moving set of vignettes which rides its giddy hooks hard....He remains one of Britain's great storytellers.
Mojo

4 stars out of 5 -- The lad may get up to no good, but his oeuvre comprises acts of supreme redemption. This is Act III.
Uncut

EASY LIVING undercuts potential mo' money, mo' problems cliches with a cheeky self-awareness that transcends national borders. -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly

Ranked #18 in Spin's The 40 Best Albums of 2006 -- [The lyrics] retain the warm, intimate vibe of his earlier stuff.
Spin

3 stars out of 5 -- Skinner is still a singular rhymer, mixing up soused spluttering, joke asides and change-on-a-dime rhythm patterns with witty narrative detail...

Another solid album from The Streets / Mike Skinner

Created: 18/03/08
I bought this because I loved the first two albums.

This one has plenty of Streets style. However, there is a bit of the originality of the first two missing. Seems like the sound is very 'typical' and identifiable with the first two albums but is missing some of the unique and surprising musical experiments from the other albums.

This feels a bit too much like American rap to me for the majority of the songs (few exceptions below).

If you love The Streets, then this is more of the same but if you are new to them, I'd buy an earlier album instead. Unless of course, you love American rap, then this is for you!

Memento Mori has a great sound, as does Never Went to Church but only for the background really.

UK Rap that's not like American Krap!

I've always liked Mike Skinner's music so I wanted to see what this CD had to offer. "Never Went To Church" actually made me well up as I also lost my dad so I really related to it...in my opinion it's his best track to date. There are a couple of songs that I wasn't too keen about but overall it's a great CD.

The Streets is definitely a type of UK rap music that takes some getting use to if you are all too familiar with the krap rap we have here in the states.
