Harlem Globetrotters: The Team that Changed the World (DVD, 2005)

I decided to buy this, because I had seen Harlem Globetrotters play live two games, one against Boston Shamrocks and one against Washington Generals, and because I liked what I saw, so I knew what to expect about this film. This film told me additional very interesting points about the Harlem Globetrotters, how they fought the right for black people to play basketball and have equal rights to play it with white people - which is something that I must say deserves respect. They proved that black people are as good basketball players as white people, if black people are not even better. They made NBA accept black people into NBA teams.

However, even if this deserves a good review from me on other points, one question to the manufacturer Warner Home Video. In the terms and conditions sale and rental outside US/Canada is described as prohibited. Why this geographical restriction? Harlem Globetrotters play all over the world, not just in North America, so their document should be available everywhere with equal conditions too.

I had recently taken the kids to see the Harlem Globetrotters and this brought back a lot of memories from seeing them play back in the 60’s. I almost bought the video at the game but the price was $25.00 so I decided to wait and check eBay. I found a buy it now for $11.99 and I had the movie in 3 days. This is a good documentary, it tells the complete history of the team and the DVD has bonus features with today’s players describing in detail how the tricks are done. If you like the Harlem Globetrotters you’ll love this DVD.

No order to the movie. It appears it was just thrown together for the money. I have always enjoyed the Harlem Globetrotters and think they are one of the finest group of basketball players and showmen that are left for our youth to enjoy. I purchased this DVD to show my grandsons but it is hard for me to follow the movie so I know it would not be enjoyable for them. I am very disappointed in this movie.

One of the only history lessons that address the issues of the sport without cramming the race card down my throat. We all know there were issues in the past but if you want to get beyond that and learn more about the history of this great team then this is the DVD for you. Don't get me wrong, this is mostly about race, just addressed in a mature manor without the "poor me today" attitude. These guys had it rough but picked themselves up and worked through the problems. There is no doubt that this is a better world today due to a lot of the HG efforts.

Watch it and learn from it.

Our family loves this DVD. We bought this documentary because our son loves basketball and is very good at it. He has already been trying to copy some of their great moves. It is so nice to be able to share this part of history with our children. My husband and I learned a lot by watching this DVD. We plan on getting some great tickets next year when they come back to Atlanta.
