Movie synopsis

Adults who may have been turned off by the more kid-friendly elements of the first two Potter films should sit up and cheer; this fourth installment of Harry's adventures at the magic school of Hogwarts is more mature and darker than its immediate predecessor. This year, Hogwarts is hosting the Tri Wizard festival, and there may be a plot afoot to off Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) during the proceedings. Hermione (Emma Watson) finds a man worthy of her in competing Russian Quidditch champion Viktor Krum (Stanislav Ivaneski), to the chagrin of Ron Weaselly (Rupert Grint) who, though growing into a fine, shaggy orange-haired figure of a lad, is still not quite mature enough to ask Hermione to the Yule ball. Krum's teacher may be involved in the dastardly get-Harry plot, which involves writhing snake tattoos, skull clouds, death-eaters, tournaments with live dragons, a submersible schooner, and a competing school of poised and beautiful girls run by Maxime (Frances de la Tour), who shares a romantic past with gamekeeper Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane). All the other favorites of the series are back as well, including Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith, and Gary Oldman, with Timothy Spall as the odious Wormtail, while a new addition to the A-list thespian roster is Ralph Fiennes. Director Mike Newell takes plenty of time to explore character development, but the story still gallops along at a breathless pace, with memorably intense moments involving fire-spewing dragons, dark magical rites, and near-drownings at the hands of slimy mer-people, all of which may prove too much for the youngest of viewers. Everyone else is advised to hold on tight.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"Newell has a gift for light comedy, and he knows just how to release the sour-ball charms of his fellow Brits..."
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (11/25/2005)

3 stars out of 4 -- "With the cast getting looser and the mind games kinkier, it's hard to resist."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (12/01/2005)

"[T]he director Mike Newell embraces the saga's dark side with flair....[T]he combination of British eccentricity, fatalism and steady-on pluck remains intact."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (11/17/2005)

"As Harry's life becomes more complex, so this film takes on a darker hue....Brit director Mike Newell enlivens the brooding atmosphere with stunning action sequences..."

USA Today - Claudia Puig (11/23/2005)

"[I]n granting THE GOBLET OF FIRE an earthier real-world tone, Newell has crafted a parable about the pains and pangs of adolescence. In doing so, he has made the most grown-up Potter yet."

4 stars out of 5 -- "GOBLET OF FIRE is crisp, vibrant, and absolutely magical."
Ultimate DVD - Richard Houldsworth (08/01/2007)

The best one out of the six movies released so far!

Created: 26/02/10
The Goblet of Fire is my favorite installment of the seven series of the Harry Potter saga. This one reminds me of the Olympics with the Quidditch tournament, how competitors in HS feel about each other and the competitive tension during the Tri Wizard Cup. It also brings some solemn reality that not all things end well in the magical world and that magic does have it's dark side. Dragons are my favorite magical creature and I was delighted to find the Welsh, Norwegian, and Hungarian cultures be reflected in the dragon breeds they chose to showcase in the Dragon Egg competition. This was a no-brainer for me to buy!

Best Potter movie so far, even better on HD DVD

Created: 25/01/08
Since it looks like Sony have bought the format wars by throwing money at the studios to go Blue-ray exclusive, I decided to get as many HD DVD version of my favorite movies so far. The resolution is fantastic, and the ability of controlling the special features or soun, screen & languages options while watching a movie is what's makes HD DVD the true format for true movie enthusiasts... but anyway, Harry Potter & the Globet of Fire looks amazing in 1028i (I don't have the HMDI cable yet), the features are must-have for any Potter fan. So far Goblet has been my favorite Harry movie yet, being a good mix of action, humor & suspense. Althoug the script is ovbiously different from the book (I didn't really missed the house-elfes or the Rita Skeeter mini-plots), I enjoyed the Harry-Cho & Hermione-Victor Krum-Ron subplots, because they served more than a deviated, as a time off to relax, and have a laugh, after all the drama & conmotion on the first 40 minutes.

HP4 on HD DVD Rules!!

Created: 10/03/08
I love HD DVD, especially this one. This is not my favorite of chapter in the HP series, but I love it just as well. It's good, it has excellent features & it looks crystal clear on my 61" HDTV. The only thing I don't like about it, is that it still has black bars [i.e. it's like letterbox]. My HDTV is 1080p and 16X9 and yet every DVD & HD DVD has it's own aspect ratio. Some fill my screen perfectly, some don't. It just makes me angry that a standard couldn't be reached in the industry. I understand why films are shot differently, but I didn't pay thousands of dollars for a 61" TV so I could watch 50 some inches of it. Blue-Ray manufactures had better get it together, because on demand HD DVD titles are definitely going to keep me from investing in future movie players after the HD DVD debacle. Cable alters HD titles to fill your screen [most of the time] and free on demand is much cheaper than a player & replacing all my favorite titles that I already own on DVD & HD DVD. But, I'm sure they'll do just fine without my money. Harry Potter Rules!

What is so great about the harry potter films is that they grow with your child, they become more intelectually stimulating and more emotionally involved. This film is deffinatly not for your very young children as it addresses the topic of death and has many scary sceens. You 9+ year old should be very much glued to the tv though... heck you'll be glued to the tv!!
