Havana Nights (DVD, 2004)

Guy Ferland, Diego Luna, Romola Garai|Theatrical release: 2004 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Katey Miller (Romola Garai) is an 18-year-old girl who is about to have the time of her life, even if she doesn't know it. When her father Bert Miller (John Slattery) is transferred to Havana in 1958, just before Katey's senior year in high school, the whole family relocates to the exotic locale, moving into a luxurious hotel filled with Americans as Cuba teeters on the brink of revolution. Bookish Katey is mesmerized by the raw intensity of the dancing she sees in a public square one afternoon--and by Javier (Diego Luna), a Cuban pool boy that works at her hotel. Soon, Katey and Javier are heating up the dance floor, combining his Latin moves with her formal ballroom training. With some inspiration from the hotel dance instructor, played by none other than the original dirty dancer Patrick Swayze, Katey enters a Latin ballroom dance competition. Based on co-producer and choreographer JoAnn Jansen's own experiences as an American teenager in Cuba, DIRTY DANCING: HAVANA NIGHTS comes to the screen 17 years after the original DIRTY DANCING debuted. This coming-of-age film also features Sela Ward as Katey's mother, and was directed by Guy Ferland (TELLING LIES IN AMERICA).

Quite surprising!!

I am a die hard Dirty Dancing fan and was quite skeptical about the sequal, but after watching it, I was shocked as to how good it really was. The reviews posted on the case say its better than the original and I wouldn't go that far but it was quite good in my eyes and I love love love that Patrick came back. Sadly there was no Jeniffer Grey as his wife (which is how I always pictured the aftermath lol), but it really is worth the watch.

This was a story quite different from the first Dirty Dancing movie with Patrick Swayze & Jennifer Grey. However it did feature some good ballroom dancing but not as much as I would have liked. The two young lead performers did do their roles well & respectively even with their cultural differences & I think the ending could have been a bit more enjoyable. There were elements of peer pressure, sibling rivalry, politically rebelliousness warfare entwined within this plot that kind of overshadowed what these 2 young people were trying to accomplish in winning a dance contest. Patrick Swayze did make an appearance though brief as a ance instructor.

Guilty Pleasure

Created: 08/12/07
If you are into chick flicks, then this is a must have. Come on, we all have little guilty pleasures that we would never admit to in public; well this is one of them. The story has nothing to do with the 1st Dirty Dancing, and it is sad to watch an aging Patrick Swayze; but the music and the dancing make up for it. Plus it has the original Wyclef'song before Shakira turned it into "hips don't lie."

Entertaining, well done movie about salsa dancing in Havana, Cuba before the Castro takeover. Katy is 18 and not the popular one; her younger sister is. Her father works for an international firm, and the entire family has recently relocated to Havana. This is the fun capitol of the Americas, only ninety miles from Key West, Florida. The American community pretty much lives, works, and plays together here. It is also sort of unacceptable for a North American girl to date or associate with locals, and there is the revolutionary aspect of everyday life. Katy befriends a Cuban boy, Javier, who works at an American resort hotel as a waiter. She admires the local dancers and tries to imitate their steps. He sees her dancing and encourages her, and shows her some steps. Soon they are getting together and really heating up the dance floor. She is a fast learner and has a lot of natural ability, and is secretly planning to enter the contest with Javier. This movie is about a dancing contest, set in Havana in 1958. It is similar in principle to Flashdance or Dirty Dancing. The same scenario, little rich girl, poor local boy from the wrong side of the tracks. This movie has lots of good sounds, great scenery, and lots of steamy dance scenes. Above average film and pretty good story.
