    Publisher's Note
Pregnant, overweight, and convinced of her inherent bad luck, Novalee Nation hopes for a new life in a new state with her boyfriend but is dumped along the way in Oklahoma, where she finds her spirit renewed

Stranded at a Wal-Mart in Oklahoma, pregnant teenager Novalee Nation is taken in by a group of down-to-earth, caring people, including the Bible-thumping Sister Thelma and the eccentric librarian Forney Hull. Reissue.

Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year-old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. Now she finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with just $7.77 in change. But Novalee is about to discover hidden treasures in this small Southwest town--a group of down-to-earth, deeply caring people willing to help a homeless, jobless girl living secretly in a Wal-Mart. From Bible-thumping blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband to eccentric librarian Forney Hull who loves Novalee more than she loves herself, they are about to take her--and you, too--on a moving, funny, and unforgettable journey to . . . Where the Heart Is.

Where the Heart Is Take this trip to find it!

    Created: 11/10/05
I found myself very caught up in the lives of all the characters in this book, not just Novalee, the main character. I wanted to know more about all of them and was sorry that Letts didn't bring more depth to a few of Novalee's neighbors. Though it was difficult to get into the first few pages of the book, I really didn't want the story to end. Letts' writing style is very descriptive, while still leaving room for your imagination to take you into the story. Novalee is so strong, but when you first meet her you would never guess she could survive let alone make a better life for herself. As for Willy Jack, he is worse than envisioned and I didn't much sympathy for him. Life for Novalee and her baby isn't a clear and straight road, but one that takes them on journey of learning and growth. Its worth trip.

I bought Where the Heart Is because I enjoyed another book by this author, Shoot the Moon, and this book was also one of Oprah's Book Club choices, and was made into a movie as well. I enjoyed it very much - unique, interesting characters, and a story that draws you in. A story of overcoming a heartbreak and misfortune, and finding love, friendship and joy. I'd definitely recommend it.
