The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things (DVD, 2006)

At first, the only reason I bought this DVD was because Dylan and Cole Sprouse (the twins on the Disney Channel series "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody") play one of the characters, but when I actually sat down to watch it, I was driven into a world of darkness and chaos.

The story is about little Jeremiah who is reclaimed by his prostitute (lot lizard) drug-addicted mother, Sarah. As you can imagine, Jeremiah's life goes from warmth and comfort into oblivion. He is molested, later brought under the care of his grandparents (who are Jesus freaks), and a lot of other crazy stuff.

Cole and Dylan Sprouse (who play Jeremiah when he reaches age 10 or so) was not what won me over. Rather, it was Jimmy Bernett, (who plays younger Jeremiah at the age of 7) and Asia Agusto (Sarah) who is also the director of the film.

This also got me hooked on the J.T. Leroy hoax. I started to buy his books, ("Sarah", "The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things" and "Harold's End.") and loved them instantly. J.T. Leroy is not a real person and all his stories are false (which were all thought to be true until the beginning of 2006), but I don't care. Both the movie and the book speak of horrors that no one dares to explain and for that I am greatful.

I musr say that if you truely want to get the most from this movie, I suggest reading the book first. When I watched the DVD the first time, some parts seemed confusing and needed explanation, but when I read the book, I went back and said "Oh... this makes total sense now."

Despite that one problem, this film is flawless. I must say that this movie is not for the weak-hearted or the close-minded. You must be able to view the world in a way that is not judgmental or you will not enjoy this film, which reminds me: even though it isn't all the sexual like the book, this isn't for the kids. This is an adult film and needs to be viewed with that in mind.

For some of you who gave this movie a bad review soley based on the J.T. Leroy hoax, you should be ashamed. Just because the story isn't true doesn't make it any less touching. There are plenty of "Jeremiahs" out there who go through the same plain and struggle that this child did and I thank J. T. Leroy and Asia for bringing us such a tale of the true world that others would not dare touch.

I like horror movies & disturbing movies. This one is sad and disturbing b/c of it being so realistic. A drug addicted mom gets her son back who was taken by CPS dose drugs around him, forces him to do drugs, has her b/f beat him, her b/f's rape him, the mother dresses him up as a girl, and the list of disturbing things go on. The little boy in the movie is the Sprouse twins from disney, one of the b/f who rape him is Marilyn Manson.

This is an excellent movie. A word of caution...thousands were released with a missing scene, so if you are buying it here make sure it comes complete with the special book inside...Palm pictures will send you a new disk if you have the dud as long as you answer their question correctly which is found in the book.

A very disturbing yet realalistic depiction. Would like to have seen this movie explore more of the begining and continued to see how things may have ended.

it was a awesome film dark gritty but very well done the acting was great the story line was very realistic of the modern day drug culture and the way children can and do get treated this is a must see movie not for the meek hearted
