Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin
Created: 01/08/10
This is the first time I have read a book by this author. I can see now why this book was on the New York Times best seller list. Ms. Giffin has the unique ability to put into words realistically, the emotions in really hard situations such as a child burned, raising children, divorce and infidelity. She does it from many perspectives as well. One can see the hurt from the wife's, the husband's and the other women's perspective. Even the childrens emotions are included. It is done so realistically that one feels like you are there and can identify with the different characters. Awesome!! Add to this, the book was a first edition at a really reasonable price that I felt that I had hit the jackpot!! I will definitely look for more books by this author.

Emily Giffin writes her books in a way that makes her readers feel the complex emotions that her characters go through. In this book, despite the plot of it, the reader does not feel there is a "villian" as most authors would portray said characters as. Instead, she shows both sides of the stories, making you feel real sadness and hope for both sides. While I was hoping that we would find out what happens with Valerie and Charlie (with the phone call) I was still delightfully pleased with the novel overall. The title says it all "heart of the matter". Excellent read and highly recommened.

i love emily's style of writing, i really get involved with the character's lives and sometimes find it hard to put down her books. she uses very little strong language and the sex scenes are tasteful, not voyeuristic.

I bought Heart of the Matter only because it was the book we decided on in my book club that meets once a month. Heart of the Matter did not impress me. The story line was okay but the author had too many descriptions about every little detail that didn't even pertain to the plot of the story. The story itself wasn't very interesting, it was very predictable and I couldn't even get half way through it. If you want to read about a guy who cheats on his wife have fun, but if I could do it all over again, I would have passed on this book :)
