Album Notes
Personnel: Michael Sweet (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, background vocals); Oz Fox (guitar, background vocals); John Van Tongeren (keyboards); Tim Gaines, Bradford Cobb (bass guitar); Robert Sweet (drums).Recording information: Master Control Studio, Burbank, CA.Photographers: Annamaria DiSanto; Suzen Carson; Anne Revenge; Neil Zlozower.Unknown Contributor Role: Stryper.Arrangers: Michael Sweet; Stephan Galfas. When the majority of Christian artists were going unheard in the secular market, Stryper became even more visible among non-Christian audiences with its third album, To Hell with the Devil. This was the first time a Stryper album went platinum -- something the headbangers' presence on MTV no doubt played a role in. And the fact that this album boasted Stryper's strongest writing up to that point didn't hurt. The southern Californians sound especially confident and inspired on "The Way," "Sing-Along Song," "More Than a Man" and the infectious title song. But as invigorating as the up-tempo numbers are, Stryper's ballads didn't improve a bit; "All of Me" and the hit "Honestly" are as annoying as ever. ~ Alex Henderson

monumental achievement

Created: 16/07/08
This classic cd will continue to rank with the best of 80's metal. It was a monumental achievement for Christian rock especially. After it, Christian rock bands seemed somehow less than in comparison. Stryper set the standard indeed.
While the title track and The Way are classic rockers, Holding On and More than a Man rank right up there. They harmonized well always and had incredible skills.
All of Me was my wedding song, and we didn't wear black and yellow leather either! The only drawback on this cd is having to see Robert Sweet teasing his hair and his suspenders not covering his nipples. Ah, the 80's...
While this is still their best and a classic forever, my favorite is still Soldiers Under Command. Some of their follow-ups have been dismal however.

chapter 1; the marketing of god.

i'll start by saying that the musicians in this band are talented, and some of the songs here are played better than most mid-80's glam rock bands.unfortunately, michael sweet's vocals are too much.lyrically, i know what stryper is trying to do, but the way it's presented here, is for the most part, too damn cheezy. free, the way, and sing a long are the best things here. i hate to say it, but, this seems like a marketing scheme gone tragically wrong! from the matching bumblebee spandex uniforms, to the fact that by 1990, with declining record sales, styper became a secular band. was it all just for money? any-hoo, the overall feel of the record can be positive, and uplifting, if you can stomach the vocals, and wade through some pretty thick cheese.

"To Hell With the Devil" - review

Created: 04/11/08
Although I'm not really into religion, but I do enjoy rock/metal music. Some of Stryper's songs sound really good, especially when replacing video game music and poping in a cd in the stereo. "To Hell With The Devil" and "Rocking The World" are best for GTA / Driver style games. The whole CD will get 5 stars. According to Heavy Metal fanatics: Metal should be the opposite of what Stryper is, metal is about satan and evil, that's why everybody hates metal and why metal fans love it. Nothing bad about Stryper, they really are an excellent band.

Christian Rock Just Isn't For Christians

Created: 20/02/11
I bought this on cassette back in high school. It has ass kicking rock n roll, high screaming vocals, unsurpassed melodies. It has ballads, screaming guitars. To Hell With the devil rocks. I had to buy this again

When I first heard a few songs off this album I was wondering who this band was. I bought the album & I was amazed that these guys rock & people didn't realize that they were a Christian band. I can now upgade to a cd.
