Hellboy II: The Golden Army (DVD, 2008, Widescreen)

Guillermo Del Toro, Ron Perlman, Selma Blair|Theatrical release: 2008 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY begs any number of referential mash-ups to be used as description of its outlandish tonal and stylistic qualities. It's a little like a romantic and sophisticated live-action Ninja Turtles movie imbued with a cracked version of H.P. Lovecraft's monster storytelling. It's a feature-length version of STAR WARS's Mos Eisley Cantina mixed with a scrappy, proficient passion for creature design reminiscent of Ray Harryhausen. It's also kind of director/co-writer Guillermo del Toro's HELLBOY (2004) wrapped in a blanket of his PAN'S LABYRINTH. This sequel is all these things, but none of them can accurately capture the singularity of a movie which, in some ways, stands alone in its ability to capture the crass and literary luridness of reading a comic book. It's filled with gross creatures bursting with humanity, dark poetry, and slapstick comedy; in one scene, an argument between Hellboy and Johann Krauss, a formless gas contained in a mobilized suit, escalates to the point of Tom-&-Jerry-like violence. As Hellboy himself, a heartfelt anti-hero who regularly eliminates supernatural threat as an agent for the U.S. Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense alongside girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair) and comrade Abe Sapien, Ron Perlman again embodies the role with the kind of pathos and humor that one can only expect from a horned, red-skinned Hell-spawn who loves kittens and acts like a hardboiled detective who happens to watch TV and drink a lot of canned beer. HELLBOY II's rather interesting antagonist, Prince Nuada, isn't just an evil dude. In the mold of the complex villains typically found in Hayao Miyazaki's animated fairy tales, his intentions of restoring control over Earth to an Elvish race by regaining the key to unlock the indestructible Golden Army are at least based on a legitimately noble sentiment before megalomania kicks in.

Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (07/11/2008)

Fans of dark fantasy movies will definitely like this one. If you take Pan's Labyrinth and add more creatures, and then give it an injection of humor, and sprinkle some Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, some Fantastic Four, and a little Lord of the Rings, and last of all let Neil Gaiman put the finishing touches, you'll probably get Hellboy II or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):

1. Humans and mythical creatures are at it again
2. One crown rules an indestructible golden army
3. Uneasy lies the head that wants to wear the crown
4. All Hellboy breaks loose after a visit from the tooth fairies
5. The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense sends a gasbag to lead the team into the bowels of New York City
6. Hellboy may be red and angry, but it's Liz (Selma Blair) who's the hottie
7. Big fights, big guns and big fun follows
8. `Twas beauty that tamed the beast

When the BPRD agents are called to take on the job of stopping rogue Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) they get a lot more than the main responsibilities listed on their job descriptions. Battling mythical creatures, disobeying direct orders, and generally tearing the place apart, our heroes never let a little adversity get them down on the way to a stellar showdown.

This is a fantasy, an adventure, a battle of good against not-so-good, and a love story, all rolled into one red hot package.

Hellboy II - Back And Better Than Ever!

I'm a HUGE fan of the comics and thought that the first movie was done just right.

I think Hellboy II: the Golden Army is as good as the first movie. It takes awhile to get used to Doug Jones' voice as Abe, but once you do, you see why it's better to have the guy in the suit doing his own dialog. And Seth McFarlane does a fine job voicing Johann (although not as I had imagined him).

The design work is superior to the first movie and the humor is ratcheted up a notch. The fights are better and more thrilling and the monsters are way cool. Great use of costumes and CGI working together (something Lucas should have done more of in the Star Wars prequels) to make everything feel REAL.

I expect many won't like it as much as the first movie because the newness will be lost. This was in fact my immediate reaction as well; but after a few days I realized I was just as excited to see it again as I was the first one.

The story isn't as grandiose as the first Hellboy, and the overall pace and build have a few problems.

Hellboy II : The Golden Army (2008, DVD)

Both Hellboy movies are a good watch. I prefer this one over the first one. Has more action and humor in it, along with a decent storyline. I wouldn't go as far to say that it's an amazing movie, because it's far from it. It was good enough to watch. It's not something I'd watch again though. To watch in a theater or to rent at the store is good. If your a fan of action/comic book series then you should watch it. The acting was par, nothing more. Just simple and easy acting in my opinion.

Just like the first movie. This is about a Demon Boy, names Hellboy (Ron Perlman) who helps protect the Human Race from creatures. Ironically, he himself is a creature. The Golden Army is a force of machines that can end and destroy the Earth. He must go through many adventures and missions in order to save the Human Race. The movie has good potential for action. I always liked the way Hellboy makes some jokes here in there. I guess I had fun watching this movie. Thanks for reading my review!

I love this movie

I am a recent Hellboy fan. I had never seen the 1st one until it was on tv. I was hooked after that & had to see the real version. The Golden Army had recently come out when I was just seeing the 1st. I couldn't find the GA one without it being the collectors edition with some included figure. I eventually gave up locally & turned to eBay. Got it 1/2 price & haven't looked back!

You have to see the scene where Red & Blue (HB & Abe) sing!! People (I was one of them) think this is some weird-I sci-fi movie. But it's much more & they are the good guys!! Who could guess by the name & looking at them?!?!

Hellboy II

I found this movie to be as good as the first one. Lots of action but wish that the golden army could have played a bigger part in the movie. This is one of those movies I will watch more than one time.

It will be interesting to see if there will be future movies with the son of hellboy or at least Hellboy III.
