Product description

Synopsis
At the outset of the civil rights movement in Jackson, Mississippi, three unique women unite to share the stories of dozens of the city's black servants, who have been kept voiceless for too long. Skeeter is fresh home from college, with big dreams of becoming a journalist, though her mother just wants her to find a husband. Aibileen, a black maid, is the heart and soul of her household, now working on raising her seventeenth white child. Her best friend Minnie, is the best cook in the city, but can not find a job because of her tendency to speak the cold truth. Together, these three unforgettable ladies launch a crusade to collect the stories of the town's silent servants, and try to tear down the unspoken racial barriers that traverse the homes and hearts of everyone in Jackson.

The wildly popular New York Times bestseller and reading group favorite

Aibileen is a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who's always taken orders quietly, but lately she's unable to hold her bitterness back. Her friend Minny has never held her tongue but now must somehow keep secrets about her employer that leave her speechless. White socialite Skeeter just graduated college. She's full of ambition, but without a husband, she's considered a failure. Together, these seemingly different women join together to write a tell-all book about work as a black maid in the South, that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town...

Industry Reviews
"Kathryn Stockett['s]...first novel is a nuanced variation on the theme that strikes every note with authenticity. In a page-turner that brings new resonance to the moral issues involved, she spins a story of social awakening as seen from both sides of the American racial divide."
(04/01/2009)

"[THE HELP] is graceful and real, a compulsively readable story of three women who watch the Mississippi ground shifting beneath their feet as the words of men like Martin Luther King Jr. and Bob Dylan pervade their genteel town."

Oh my stars, if you read just one book this year, red this one! I grew up in Missouri in the 50s and 60s and it rang as true as could be. We were Southern, not the deep South, but we had and still have so many of the same issues as they dealt with in the book. True, it was written by a white woman, but she lived it and she, like so many in the book, was raised by the African American woman who worked for her family. Some of caviled at her use of dialect when writing in the voice of one of the maids, but that dialect was true to the time and I did not feel it was in any sense demeaning. Her women are smart and strong and believable, particularly as they struggle within the constraints of their time and culture. You will grieve at what they go through, but ultimately, you will stand and cheer at how they prevail.

As to buying this book on eBay--I was able to get a better price on this brand-new book. It came almost immediately and the packaging ensured that it arrived in pristine condition. The seller is an absolute professional--truly top-notch.

Like the rest of the world, I'm in love with eBay, too. It is the people's commerce and it totally rocks.

I purchased this book due to the popularity of sales and hoped for a realistic, but humorous, take on this historic period.

It was a complete disappointment. The first several chapters were alright, but then the tedious, boring, difficult rheotoric went on, and on, and on.

It is NOT a true reflection of the historical content, some truths without question, but so skewed as to be unrecognizable. Simplistic and without any real humor. I disliked the story and characters. I would never purchase it again - nor will I buy another of this author's work.

This is a very good book! It gives us a picture of the deep south in the 60's, from the female perspective. It has characters you hate to say goodbye to, and a story that you never want to end. I really wish Ms. Stockett would write a second book, starting where the 1st left off. Everyone that I know that has read it, LOVED it, so that's a pretty good rating. It's an easy read, good for summer, but it tells a very important story of trust, old habits dying hard, and unexpected friendships. You won't be disappointed!
