In Her Shoes (DVD, 2006, Full Frame)

Curtis Hanson, Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

IN HER SHOES: In this screen adaptation of Jennifer Weiner's bestselling novel, Toni Collette (MURIEL'S WEDDING) is Rose Feller, an overweight, overworked, and painfully undersexed lawyer who fills an emotional void with pints of Haagen-Dazs and a closetful of expensive shoes that she never wears. Little sis Maggie (an always radiant Cameron Diaz), who is prone to public drunkenness, one-night stands, and wearing lingerie as outerwear, is as lacking in career prospects as her sister is in romantic ones. When her irresponsible behavior gets her kicked out of her father's house by her spiteful stepmother, Maggie has nowhere to crash but her elder sister's couch. But, after she ignites a series of disasters ranging from the minor to the catastrophic, Maggie is cast out by her angry older sibling, with no job, no money, and no one to take her in. She finds a stash of hidden letters in her father's desk drawer that enable her to track down her estranged grandmother (the wonderfully centered Shirley MacLaine) in a Florida retirement community, hoping to use her impressive skills of manipulation and false charm to financial benefit. While Maggie begins to adapt to life as a nubile young fish in the waters of shuffleboard and wheelchairs, Rose, up in the wintry north, quits her stifling job and begins her own personal transformation. Both women's paths to spiritual growth and self-actualization might ring false if handled by less nuanced performers and a flashier director, but here they are subtle enough to be both inspiring and realistic.Director Curtis Hanson has proven to be a flexible artist, jumping from genre to genre with the prowess and confidence of those studio directors of Hollywood's Golden Age. With IN HER SHOES, the man behind L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and 8 MILE elevates the "chick flick" out of that pigeonhole, crafting a story of surprising depth and universal appeal.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

3 stars out of 5 -- "[S]exy, touching and astringently funny....Diaz and Collette are sensational, and MacLaine -- underplaying to marvelous effect -- does her best acting in years."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (10/20/2005)

"[A] richly textured story…. Ms. Collette is so very good and goes so very deep inside her character -- bringing us right alongside her -- that she becomes the de facto center of the film as well as the beneficiary of our greatest emotional investment."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (10/07/2005)

"[T]his is the most enjoyable film of its type in recent memory....The movie takes off in some pleasurable directions -- some comic, some touching."
USA Today - Mike Clark (10/07/2005)

"The plot math is neat, the cultural references are easy, the jokes are sitcom-honed..."
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (10/14/2005)

"The film improves whenever MacLaine is on screen; she brings a wry, world-weary dignity to the role of Ella."
Sight and Sound - Jessica Winter (12/01/2005)

Included in Entertainment Weekly's Top Ten Films Of The Year -- "Curtis Hanson directs this charmed confection with a romance and pain, a frivolity and grace, that will leave you laughing through tears."
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (12/30/2005)

"The diverse talents of Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine all shine under the capable direction of Curtis Hanson..."
Movieline's Hollywood Life - Movieline Critic (01/01/2006)

"The film, directed by Curtis Hanson, is manipulative, but confidently so, and improbably affecting. Nothing in Ms. Diaz's career foreshadowed this beautiful performance."
Wall Street Journal (01/14/2011)

Good Movie

Created: 01/07/06
This is a movie about two sisters who have nothing in common, yet are still best friends. Maggie is wild and spontanious and a pain in the butt. She just can't settle down and keep a job. Her sister Rose (played by Toni Collette), is the opposite. She is a successful lawyer and quite uptight. Maggie does something awful to her sister and they have a fight. After she leaves she travels to meet her long lost grandmother that they didn't know was still alive. There she straightens her life out and her sister finds herself as well.

I purchased this movie when I found it because it fit in nicely with National Assisted Living Week for which I was looking for some movies to show to my neighbors and myself (we are residents in an Assisted Living Home). I guess what I liked most about it was that it was a story about the life of a girl who was having difficulties finding her niche in life since she had not been a brilliant student in school and was lacking in job-related skills. When she visited her grandmother (played by Shirley MacLaine, one of my favorite actresses) in an Assisted Living Community in Florida, she not only found a productive niche for herself but she also met a gentleman who was able to help her understand that she had not been dumb in school. She had experienced (as so many children have experienced) living and trying with undiagnosed Learning Disabilities for which she had not received the proper academic interventions that would have helped her achieve on a higher lever in classrooms. It was a wonderful presentation of that situation and of how she was able to become a productive member of the work force because she related well to senior citizens. I don't think I disliked anything about it, and I would buy it again in a minute.

Good Jokes with this 'girl' flick. Cameron uses her manipulations and both ladies blossom! This movie was not boring at all...something always happening!
