The Herbal Drugstore: The Best Natural Alternatives to Over-The-Counter and Prescription Medicines! by Steven Foster and Linda B. White (2003, Paperback, Reprint)

Author: Steven Foster, Linda B. White | Publisher: Rodale Pr | Language: English

Product description

Synopsis
THE HERBAL DRUGSTORE compares and contrasts over 700 herbal treatments against their over-the-counter (OTC) counterparts. Thorough and well researched, this book is a boon for anyone interested in reducing their dependency on OTC drugs for common ailments. Covering a broad range of topics like skincare, cataracts, and hangovers, THE HERBAL DRUGSTORE is as complete as any corner pharmacy. Linda B. White and her partner, Steven Foster, do an excellent job in explaining the basics of herbalism and how to prepare and administer herbs in controlled doses. Special attention is given to possible negative interactions between herbs and OTC or prescription medications. An entire third of the book is devoted to listing ailments and their possible herbal and OTC treatments. The ailments are broken down into specific symptoms, which are then each addressed individually. In this manner, a patient's body is not forced to metabolize unnecessary herbs or drugs. Equally as large and just as exhaustive is the list of individual herbs and their sources, uses, and safety concerns. An herbal shopping guide and instructions for preparing herbal remedies close out this essential herbal guide and reference book.

Publisher's Note
Ease Symptoms, Fight Disease, and Supercharge Immunity-- All without Drugs or Chemicals!

You're about to enter a completely different kind of drugstore. One where herbal medicines are offered right alongside conventional pharmaceuticals. Where bottles of feverfew stand next to bottles of aspirin, and echinacea has its place among other cold and flu remedies.

The Herbal Drugstore is the only place where you can compare mainstream drug treatments and their herbal alternatives for close to 100 common health problems. You'll find herbs that have the same healing powers as many prescription and over-the-counter medications-- only they're cheaper and gentler, with few or no side effects.

Whether you need fast first-aid or long-term relief, The Herbal Drugstore has a remedy for you. Here's just a sampling:

* Immobilized by arthritis? Rub on capsaicin cream, a natural pain reliever made from hot peppers (page 96)

* Can't sleep? Start snoozing with valerian-- it's as effective as Valium, but it isn't addictive (page 352)

* Want to lose a few pounds? Get a helping hand from psyllium, an herbal alternative to appetite suppressants (page 448)

* Feeling stressed? Calm jangled nerves with ginseng-- it won't undermine alertness (page 509)

* Battling bronchitis? Clear up that cough with licorice, a natural expectorant (page 129)

* Need help with high blood pressure? Turn to hawthorn-- it has much in common with beta blockers, except for the side effects (page 326)

The Herbal Drugstore features these and many more herbal remedies-- 712 in all! They're profiled right next to their pharmaceutical counterparts, so you can make your own comparisons and decide which treatments are best for you.

Profiles nearly sixty herbs, covering applications, dosage, medical equivalents, drug/herb and herb/herb interactions, safety, sources, and preparation.

I like the fact that herbal treatments are available and are actually effective when used with a physicians knowledge so that other drugs can be adjusted/ ballanced to ensure proper dosages. That and the fact they are ceaper and in a lot of cases just as effective.

The book gives great detail about the herbs that can help you fight different medical problems and how much you need to take every day. There is also a list of suppliers to order from. Most of the stuff you can grow in your own garden or pick up at the local grocery store.
