Kandi is essentially an R&B singer, and a skilled one, but the song structures and arrangements on her debut album are informed by hip-hop production style to such an extent that she seems to transcend R&B tropes and enter the more expansive realms of hip-hop. Her vocal rhythms certainly nod to the purposefully off-kilter syncopation of rap, but she remains consistently melodic. One of the most attractive aspects of HEY KANDI is the wider sonic palette made available by forsaking R&B clichT for the larger canvas of hip-hop. From string-section samples to throaty, electronically modified background voices and skittering electronic percussion that verges on the breakbeat, HEY KANDI's production is consistently fresh-sounding and inviting.
