Movie synopsis

A breathtakingly photographed, epic western like none produced for decades, HIDALGO recounts the life of legend Frank T. Hopkins (Viggo Mortensen). Set in the 1800s, this family film chronicles the triumphant victory won by Frank and his mustang Hidalgo in the Ocean of Fire, an often-fatal competition in which the best riders and thoroughbreds race across Middle Eastern deserts. For Frank, who is known in the west for his prowess as a Pony Express rider and the winner of long-distance horse races, the lure of the Ocean of Fire is not only the $100,000 purse but also the clear challenge--both of which prove irresistible, and inspire him to travel across the world for this life-altering experience. With sweeping landscapes that evoke John Ford westerns like STAGECOACH and THE SEARCHERS, HIDALGO features enough racing, rivalry, and romance to befit any action film. But the race also provides a vehicle for the story of Frank forgiving himself for his participation in the Wounded Knee slaughter and accepting his part-Indian ancestry. The film's message, highlighted in a particularly moving scene where Frank invokes the spirits of his Native American ancestors, is that the key to happiness is accepting yourself as you are.

"HIDALGO has a sweet-natured appeal that welcomes sentiment without overdoing it."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (03/05/2004)

Frank Hopkins, reputed to be one of the best riders of the Wild West, gets his chance to prove his talent when an affluent sheik invites him to join one of the most outrageous and grueling races of all -- a 3,000-mile trek across the Arabian Desert. Previously, the event was open only to those who ride Arabian horses. But now Hopkins is allowed to join the fray with his faithful mustang, Hidalgo.

Hidalgo, A+

I love this movie! Something about horses and the Old West that always gets me, even though the main part of the movie was in the Middle East. The scenery and horsemanship were beautiful.

Also, I appreciated the fact that it tried to accurate portray the Battle at Wounded Knee and the affect it had on one who was there.

Inspiring Movie but they should've used real mustangs

Created: 08/10/10
The horses in the movie they used to play Hidalgo were Quarter horses - since Mustangs are currently being slaughter and removed from US land by the hundreds, they should have used the "real" mustangs for the movie instead of putting $$$ in the pockets of horse breeders. Shame on the Producers for that. There are now more Mustangs in holding pens then there are running in the wild and thier numbers have been so drastically reduced that the limited "gene pool" will eventually cause extinction... Very sad... I love my adopted mustang - best horse I've ever had - he's my Hidalgo - loyal, proud, courageous, intelligent, swift and steady on his feet... adopt a part of America's history today!

I love this movie and it has become one of my favorites. It has adventure, surprise, many issues that are still applicable to today, romance, friendship, the reminder that first impressions aren't always correct.

The acting is great...good cast...very believable. If you like movies about various cultures and the wild west and it's values, you'll love this movie.
