High Tension (DVD, 2005, Widescreen - Unrated)

Alexandre Aja, Maiwenn Le Besco, Cecile de France|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: Unrated

Movie synopsis

In the 1970s, moviegoers reveled in a new sub-genre of horror films that were low on plot, required only the most basic acting skills, and called upon dumb teenagers to die onscreen deaths in a multitude of strange and horrific ways. The slasher movie was born, and with it came classic features such as THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, HALLOWEEN, and FRIDAY THE 13TH. The genre enjoyed a postmodern revival in the late-20th and early-21st centuries with films such as SCREAM and SCARY MOVIE, but French director Alexandre Aja (FURIA) hauls the slasher film back to its roots with his gore-addled romp HIGH TENSION.Like the most effective additions to the genre, HIGH TENSION's plot is elemental, and simply serves as a springboard for Aja to deliver lashes of blood and guts. Alex (Maiwenn Le Besco) and Marie (Cecile De France) are two teenage girls who head out to Alex's family home in the French countryside. Once there, their idyllic and peaceful time is abruptly disturbed when a maniac breaks into the house and butchers Alex's parents. The shadowy figure captures Alex and throws her into his van, while Marie escapes and sneaks into the vehicle in order to save her friend. By affording very little screen time to the unhinged protagonist who attacks the family, Aja creates a genuinely scary villain, recalling Wes Craven's treatment of Freddy Krueger in the first NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET movie. While the violence is explicit and the girls fit perfectly into their roles, Aja prevents the film from lapsing into parody by packing a mind-bending twist into the plot. A valuable and fun addition to the canon of slasher films, HIGH TENSION shows there is still plenty of life left in the genre.

OUTSTANDING !!!!

Created: 27/11/06
If I could give this movie 10 stars I would !!!! I applaud the producers and film crews for making and presenting this outstanding thriller with a mind !!!! "HIGH TENSION" is a movie that grabs your soul and wrenches it ruthlessly, all the while asking you to think!!!! -- A dark figure comes knocking on the door at a family's farmhouse residence one evening, (where a full family and daughter's college roomate (Cecile de France) is staying over with them for the holidays). The slaughterfest begins as the dark figure lays murderously into the family and kidnaps the daughter, while her college female roomate manages to hide under the bed and escape the wrath of the slayings. She thinks quickly and witnesses the clamoring truck (reminiscent of "Jeepers Creepers") preparing to leave with the daughter lumped into the back, ALIVE !!!. She slips into the truck, unbeknownst to the sadistic killer and has now become an unwilling participant in a whirlwind mesmerizing journey of evil incarnate, all the while trying to free her friend from the grasps of this unrelenting maniac. -- This movie creates tension like no other film I can honestly recall. It will spin you through multitudes of scenes and nail-clasping moments where you actually find yourself holding your breathe, hoping the killer doesn't suddenly hear YOU and turn and stare right into the screen at you in your home. -- When the final, thought-provoking end is released, your mind rushes into overdrive as you begin to quickly replay all the madness and start to chillingly realize, "NO WAY!!!!" and the film isn't done! (I literally sat upright on my couch, from my laying down enjoying the movie position, and grasped my head in absolute shock!!!! I never saw a plot twist get dropped like this one !!!!) -- The final medlum is on. As you may see from the cover, up-and-coming actress Cecile de France is not going to die easy as she is prepared to fight to the death for her life....and the life of her friend. For the most incredible journey of madness and the most sickening of mind-twists the year (or set of last 10 years) can possibly offer you....DON'T MISS THIS !!!!

Now This is SCAREY!

Created: 10/05/06
As I said in my review of "Wolf Creek" This is the movie you should see. As the other reviewer said, the dubbing is absolutely horrid, but the movie had us on the edge of our chairs til the end. Unlike Hostel & Wolf Creek this one doesn't take an hour to "get going". It get's going quick & stays there til the end. There are alot of things in the plot that after the movie is over you say "no way" couldn't have been possible, but that's after the fact, while it's on you never think about that stuff because you so intense on the edge of your seat, so the writer's & director's accomplished their goals of making you believe what they wanted you to believe and grabbing your attention fast, that is something today's "scarey" movies don't seem to have anymore. The music, lighting etc. all played into the scariness of this film and it's nice to see a film that actually was good at being scarey. I mean let's face it, I'm not a kid anymore, so nothing will ever scare me like the first time I saw Friday the 13th at a drive in theater, but movies like this that keep you holding your breath, are about as good as you can hope for. If you are a True Horror Film Lover, see this movie!

High Tension - Surprisingly GOOD Movie

Created: 29/11/10
Bought this for a family member who loves horror films.

The description was interesting, and the auction was affordable, so I thought "What the heck", and got it.

As we watched it, we were surprised at what a good job was done with this movie (we'd thought it would have been another lame foreign film), but HIGH Tension DOES Surprise!

Great horror flick with all the right elements for good tension & fear! And they do save the best for last. Buy it -- I'm sure you'll enjoy it as we did.
Can't wait to watch it next Halloween!!

^_^

Is that a circular saw I hear?

Created: 23/06/07
A total explosion for horror films!A great change for american film.Though it was not made here,it was released.Somehow this manages to slip pass our censors.Blood, guts, and circular saws...everything a horror flick should be.Beyond the red stuff they actually worked in a story line with a plot twist.Perhaps a few american directors could take a hint and try not overwhelming the scenes with total blood, and try to add a little story. Thanks Europe for revitalizing horror films!
