Movie synopsis

IN THEATERS MARCH 10, 2006Alexander Aja remakes Wes Craven's horror classic concerning a family of travelers who set up camp in a former testing ground for atomic bombs. Another family--of flesh-eating nuclear mutants!--decides to move in on them., With his 2006 remake of Wes Craven's 1977 slasher THE HILLS HAVE EYES, French director Alexandre Aja manages to accomplish what many directors fail to do by making his film a definite improvement over the original. With Craven on board as producer, Aja sticks pretty closely to the first film's script and storyline, but with the help of a larger budget, special effects, better actors, and slick cinematography, creates a much scarier story. While the film's setting is contemporary, it maintains a 1970s feel in parts, paying tribute to the decade in which the slasher subgenre was born. With an interesting opening-credit sequence consisting of actual nuclear testing footage, we are told that the film's desert setting was the site of nuclear testing during the 1950s and ‘60s. Warned to vacate, the miners that lived there refused to leave, thus subjecting themselves to high levels of toxic radiation, and breeding mutant babies as a result. It is this generation of now-grown mutants that the poor Carter family has the misfortune to encounter while driving through New Mexico on their way to California. When their vehicle breaks down in the desert, the Carters are too busy bickering with one another to realize they have entered enemy territory. But it doesn't take long for the demented creatures living in the hills to make their presence known. The gorefest that follows is packed with terribly frightening scenes of the deformed killers delighting in the torment and intended kill of each family member, young mothers, teen girls, and babies included. Much of the film is set in a government-created test city in which deteriorating mannequins take the place of actual humans. Posing lifelessly alongside their mutant neighbors, these waxy figures provide a chilling backdrop for the graphic war between the mutants and their victims.

Best Horror DVD of 2006

I'm a huge fan of horror films. And after so many disappointing slasher films released this year, I finally found one that completely kept my interest in its entirety. I'm not saying that The Hills Have Eyes is Oscar worthy by any means, but this really was a great film. As you may expect with a 21st Century horror remake, the acting was sub-par, the special effects were great, and it was just the right length. We all know that horror films really started getting good when the notion of reality was introduced to the genre (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and this followed the lead. The basic idea was that mining families in the 40s refused to leave their homes despite the threat of nuclear testing by the US government in the southwest region of the states. The radiation from the aformentioned tests caused deformaties and gene mutation that subsequently (and in addition to inbreeding) led to birth defects, etc. in newborns over many generations. These families lived secluded and off the radar in the deserts in what was ligltly alluded to as Area-51. If you've seen Wrong Turn (Eliza Dushku), the premise is similar. This story is about a particular family heading to California through the New Mexico desert and their trials and tribulations in dealing with the mining families. You'll notice an apperance by that Austrailian chick from the popular TV series Lost, minus the accent. The movie is quite predictable, and has a few surprising moments. For the simple fact that it's a horror film, i had to give it a 4 of 5. It's at least worth a trip to blockbuster or a spot in your Netflix queue. At the time of this writing the release is fairly recent so you'll probably have a hard time finding it used or new for much less that its MSRP.

Movie is a trip...

Wes Craven's classic horror masterpiece brought back in this remake. Mutants, from a nuclear blast, are the bloodthirsty predators to a family stranded in the New Mexico desert. This film definately has gut-wrenching gore scenes and make-up effects along with heart-stopping suspense. Stay on the edge of your seat and the edge of your sanity......

Just, OK

OK, remake. Alexander Aja who directed High Tension fell a little short on this one. High Tension was awesome. The story was a little weak, but the makeup of the mutants was good. I saw this in the theater and compared it to the Unrated DVD. The removed scenes didn't make any difference and didn't seem too violent to warrant it's removal.

The Hills have eyes!!!! Yes this movie rocked pretty much. Love the monsters. Pretty good plot since it took place somewhere near the desert of New Mexico. However the characters in this movie did kinda a poor job acting. Now you know to beware of living near the desert! You never know there can be deformed human beings! A+

A Great Remake

I went in not expecting much and came out a lot more satisfied than one would imagine. One thing Aja gets right is the desert atmosphere, the scenery makes the film all the bit better. I myself have interest in nuclear testing and such so I might have came to like more than the next person. But everyone should apreciate things such as the test village in which the mutants live, a picturesque 50s suburbian environment in a desolated desert. All in all it's one of the better horror movies I've seen lately. Also the kills are shocking and satisfying.
