    Publisher's Note
"This is the story of an extraordinary boy with a brilliant mind, a heart of gold, and a tortured soul. It is the story of an illness, a fight to live, and a race against death."From the day he was born, Nick Traina was his mothers joy. By nineteen, he was dead. This is Danielle Steels powerful personal story of the son she lost and the lessons she learned during his courageous battle against darkness. Sharing tender, painful memories and Nicks remarkable journals, Steel brings us a haunting duet between a singular young man and the mother who loved him--and a harrowing portrait of a masked killer called manic depression, which afflicts between two and three million Americans.Nick rocketed through life like a shooting star. Signs of his illness were subtle, often paradoxical. He spoke in full sentences at age one. He was a brilliant, charming child who never slept. And at first, even his mother explained away his quicksilver moods. Nick always marched to a different drummer. His gift for writing was extraordinary, his musical talent promised a golden future. But by the time he entered junior high, Danielle Steel saw her beloved son hurtling toward disaster and tried desperately to get Nick the help he needed--the opening salvos of what would become a ferocious pitched battle for his life.Even as he struggled, Nicks charisma and accomplishments remained undimmed. He bared his soul in his journal with uncanny insight, in searing prose, poetry, and song. When he was finally diagnosed and treated, it bought time, but too little. In the end, perhaps nothing could have saved him from the insidious disease that had shadowed him from his earliest years. At once a loving legacy and an unsparing depiction of a devastating illness, Danielle Steel's tribute to her lost son is a gift of life, hope, healing, and understanding to us all.

Danielle Steel's powerful, personal story of the 19-year-old son she lost to the masked killer called manic depression recounts the author's tender, painful memories and shares Nick's remarkable journals, bringing readers a haunting duet between a singular young man and the mother who loved him.

The author relates her son's struggle with manic depression, describing the early signs of his illness, the diagnosis and treatment that bought some time, and the final tragedy of his suicide at age nineteen

This book is a true story about Danielle Steel's son who struggled with manic depression. I thought I'd enjoy the book more. And I hope Julie who took in Nick really loved him and it wasn't for the money she undoubtedly was paid. My heart goes out to this family and the struggles they endured with Nick and the media.

    Story of Danielle Steel's son

    Created: 06/02/09
Fantastic book, great insight to mental illness. Loved it. Danielle projects her thoughts very well and explains the many issues related to her son's illness. A very good read especially for those of us who might be dealing with similar situations with a family member. I have been reading her books for quite some time now, but to read a true story involving her life is especially enlightening. I really didn't know she had gone through this with a son whom is no longer with us. God Bless Danielle for sharing with us!

    HIS BRIGHT LIGHT

    Created: 20/01/10
THIS IS AN INSPIRATIONAL BOOK ABOUT THE USE OF DRUGS, HOW THEY TAKE OVER YOUR LIFE AND THE AFFECTS OF BEING A.D.H.D..THIS BOOK TELLS THE STORY OF THE STRUGGLES OF A MOTHER AND FAMILY TRYING TO GET THEIR LOVED ONE TO FIND HIMSELF AND BE STRAIGHT. IT SHOWS THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY, WHAT THE FAMILY GOES THROUGH TO TRY AND HELP THEIR LOVED ONE TO LIVE A "NORMAL" LIFE. WE ALWAYS HEAR ABOUT WHAT THE ADDICT GOES THROUGH, BUT, NOT WHAT HIS LOVED ONES FEEL AND GO THROUGH. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE THE RICHEST OF RICH OR THE POORER OF POOR..................THE STORY IS THE SAME FOR ALL OF US!!! GREAT READ!!
