    Industry Reviews
"[A] fascinating but in some respects flawed book...The trouble with Cornwell's book lies with its sensationalism."
New York Review of Books - Istvan Deak (03/23/2000)

"If true, this tale redefines the entire history of the twentieth century..."
Washington Post Book World - Tad Szulc (10/03/1999)

"There is a lot of room between St. Pius XII and Hitler's Pope--which is where one can find most of the knowledgeable historians."
New York Times - Peter Steinfels (10/02/1999)

"Is the indictment persuasive? Sadly, it is."
San Francisco Chronicle Book Review - Steve Weinberg (09/26/1999)

"By combining the painstaking research of other scholars with his own new documentation on Pius's knowledge and behavior during World War II, John Cornwell, a British journalist and research associate of Jesus College, Cambridge, makes a case in HITLER'S POPE that is difficult to refute."
New York Times Book Review - V. R. Berghahn (09/26/1999)

"[Cornwell's] book surpasses all others on the subject--and the evidence is always honestly presented, allowing one to establish clear areas of agreement and disagreement with the author."
London Review of Books - R.W. Johnson (03/30/2000)

"The first serious and complete biography of Eugenio Pacelli, Pius XII....[Cornwell's] criticism...is a devastating refutation of the claim that this Pope's diplomacy can in any way be characterized as wisdom."
Atlantic Monthly - James Carroll (10/01/1999)

"...[A] reasonably lively, good-hearted history, based largely on secondary sources, of the pontificate of Pius XII."
    Literary Review - A. N. Wilson (11/01/1999)

"...[T]he subject of the Catholic Church and the Holocaust--the burden of his study--is one that needs dispassionate handling. And it is a pity, because Mr. Cornwell, a professional historian, thoughtful Catholic, and vivid writer, has a solid case that he spoils by intemperance. In effect, he blames one man for events in which, though he played a major role, he could scarcely have exercised control."
    Economist (10/09/1999)

The Pope who was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

    Created: 02/03/09
I practically cried as I finished reading this book. Not an easy reading. A supposed "man of God", or "right hand man" of many Catholics is documented in this book to have not only turned a blind eye to the ascendency of Adolph Hitler, but placated him for his fight against communism. While of course Pacelli (the name of this Pope) was against Hitler's policies, he did too little, too late to stop him before he carried out his master plan.
The book documents the Pope's blindness when it came to the Jewish people, not intervening in occupied catholic countries such as Hungary, croatia, and even in his own backyard in Italy when the Nazi's rounded up Jews and murdered them.
His excuse was "it could be worse"....for the Catholics is refuted with other examples of other Priests who DID fight the Nazi's and were not executed and whose defiance against the final solution helped save many Jews. This Pope however decided not to intervene to save Jewish lives even when all that was asked was to direct other catholic clergy to protest the massacres. If he would've just spoken out and proclaimed to all the catholic buthchers under Hitler that they would not get communion, or will go to Hell if they commit murder of innocents, millions of lives could've been saved. But the Pope -as is documented in this book- turned a blind eye at his brothers in spirit and caused directly and indirectly the murder of thousands under the tyranny of Hitler's Germany & minions.
Highly recommended to read and to take a lesson from today's Pope, and see has the Vatican really learned anything in the past 60+ years?
