Album Notes
Personnel includes: Garth Brooks (vocals); Mark Casstevens, Johnny Christopher (acoustic guitar); Pat Alger (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Chris Leuzinger (electric guitar); Bruce Bouton (steel guitar, background vocals); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Rob Hajacos (fiddle, background vocals); Sam Bush (fiddle, mandolin, background vocals); Terry McMillan (harmonica); Bobby Wood (piano, keyboards); Mike Chapman (bass, background vocals); Edgar Meyer (bass); Milton Sledge (drums, percussion).Recorded at Jack's Tracks Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Garth Brooks. It is almost redundant to have the words "Garth Brooks" and "THE HITS" on the same album cover because this country music phenom is synonymous with the term "hit." After selling a gazillion records and topping the country singles chart, Brooks' "best of" collection has brought him to the peak of the pop album chart as well.Everything is in place on THE HITS. Included are the anthems ("Ain't Goin' Down," "Standing Outside The Fire" and the courageously inspirational "We Shall Be Free"), the power ballads ("The River," "The Thunder Rolls," "If Tomorrow Never Comes" and Garth's personal favorite, "The Dance"), the novelty hits ("Friends In Low Places," "America Honky Tonk Bar Association"), the pop cover (Billy Joel's "Shameless"), the cowboy songs ("Much Too Young To Feel This Damn Old," "Rodeo"), even a taste of zydeco ("Callin' Baton Rouge").The 18 songs document five years of mixing traditional country with a well-defined pop orientation, making a mega-star out of Brooks and instant country classics out of his songs. Culled from five of his six albums (no cuts from the Christmas disc BEYOND THE SEASON), these prime selections provide an accurate account of Garth's young yet accomplished career. THE HITS is a godsend for fans, and a superb introduction for those one or two people who aren't already familiar with Brooks' work.

Editorial Reviews
A talent savvy enough to play every chunk of country's new constituency, Brooks proves his mettle...by moving from...Western cliches...to...pop sheen....forget about any deeper significance...
Musician (19950401)

...The 18 songs crammed onto THE HITS offer an easy-on-the-brain mix of James Tayloresque ballads, Western swing, and Southern rock....Songs like these show that country is still relevant, even progressive at times... - Rating: B+

I'm not a big country Fan, but you gotta like Garth B

Created: 07/12/06
I initially bought this cd because my brother-in-law asked me to look for it for him on Ebay. I found several for great deals and ended up buying two, one for me and one for him. I am a white guy who listens to Rock n Roll, Rap, Metal, and Alternative Music. My Brother-in-Law is what I would call a Metrosexual Mexican American who Listens to pop, latin, and other stuff. I was surprised when he asked me to buy this album, and after recieving his, I remembered how much I too Liked Garth Brooks and specifically the songs on this album and bought one for myself. This album is a great slice of popular Garth tunes and some of them still give me chills(ie "the River", & "the thunder rolls"). Even if you are a country music hater, like myself, you have to give credit to Garth Brooks and this album as he crosses the lines of typical country tunes and really connects with his listener on this album. Sometimes, I personally resist pop culture due to the fact that "everybody likes it", but with Garth and this album , you can't go wrong. If you are familiar with even just one song on this album, it is worth it to own it for the rest to see what you are missing. I played this album for my wife and she too now appreciates Garth Brooks and was pleasantly surprised by his music. He is the Michael Jordan of Country music. Even if you can't stand the twangy guitars and cowboy hats, Garth seems to make it ok, at least while your listening to him and his interpretation. I recommend this album to everyone.

Garth Brooks The Hits [Limited Edition]

Created: 07/09/06
The closest Major City to me is Houston, Texas. I attended Garth's "First" concert in a small cub in downtown Houston and there were 35 people in the audience, but in less than a year Garth Brooks appeared at the Houston Livestoick Show & Rodeo and he packed the "Astrodome" had an audience of 50,000+. Then Garth had two shows in the Houston Summit, which holds approx 17,000 and both shows were sold out. Then Garth appeared at the Houston Rodeo again, setting an attendance record. My next concert was at Stephen F. Austin College about 150 Miles NE of Houston. I was then lucky enough to see Garth in cocert in the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. The reason that these concerts are important to this CD is because Garth and his Band played all of the songs on this CD during these "Live" concert dates. So each song on the Cd, brings wonderful memories of the greatest concerts I had ever seen by a Country Music Star. A great synopsis of Garth and his rise to fame is put to a pleasant read at a web-site, "http://www.gbthehits.com/garth.html". Check it out! The Hits CD is the best Collection of Garth's Muisic from his First Five CD's!
Get it and you will love it. Also it is a Collectible Cd, Since it will never be remade and you have Garth's Word on that Fact.
I just hope he tours again, so I can see him in concert one last time.

Garth's 1st Best Of Album Shows Early Hits

Created: 29/03/08
Having seen Garth live in New York City's Central Park a few years back I can state I am a very big Garth fan. And I did buy the later Garth Brooks Ultimate Hits CD. Unless you are a big fan and just looking at being able to have every of Garth's CDs you are probably better off going for the Ultimate Hits CD just released. This one though does have many of the best songs arguably of Garth's career that helped change and define country music during the 1990s.

JUST A GREAT CD!!! Must have for a collection!!!

Created: 24/09/06
I am a huge Garth Brooks fan so I want to start by saying that I love all his music. However, this CD offers the best of his earlier stuff! The CD quality is great and its all studio recordings!!! (NO LIVE STUFF, WHICH I AM NOT A FAN OF)! This is definately a CD you can put in your CD player and listen to from beginning to end. There is no need for me to list my favs since I love everyone of them, but I have to say Friends in Low Places, Rodeo, Calling Baton Rouge are some of my picks!!!

Garth Brooks is the king of 1990's country!

Created: 06/09/07
This CD is pretty much a classic by now but I it is still an awesome CD! Except for one or two songs this whole CD is filled with the best songs that you could listen to over and over again. True, you could download these songs of the internet for free but it would take you a while to get all the songs in a high quality copy so why not buy this CD for a couple bucks instead?

Yes, Garth Brooks has had dozens of hits in his career and most of them are on this CD. Every song on this album was a hit in it's day. You'll know all of them by heart!
