Andrew Davis, Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver|Theatrical release: 2003 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Louis Sachar's acclaimed teen adventure novel comes to dazzling life with this wildly entertaining adaptation. Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) is an unassuming adolescent whose family has been cursed for generations. One day, after Stanley is falsely accused of stealing a pair of sneakers, he is sentenced to 18 months at Camp Green Lake. But when he gets there, he discovers that this camp is really more like a prison. Under the supervision of the fiery Mr. Sir (Jon Voight) and goofy Dr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson), Stanley and his cohorts must spend each day digging holes in the desert, in order "to build character." Or at least that's what The Warden (Sigourney Weaver) says. When Stanley finally gathers up the courage to escape the camp, he and fellow escapee Zero (Khleo Thomas) stumble across a secret that will expose Camp Green Lake for the evil place that it is, and erase the Yelnats family curse forever. Director-producer Andrew Davis (THE FUGITIVE) performs a miraculous feat with HOLES, crafting a family film that is smart, funny, and engaging. Sachar's story teaches enormously valuable lessons about respect, teamwork, and honesty, making HOLES a must-see for individuals everywhere.

Editorial reviews

"...The tough, prickly camaraderie among the boys and their solidarity in the face of adult cruelty give the picture its heart and also its pedigree....The younger actors are appropriately boisterous and appealing..."

USA Today - Claudia Puig (04/18/2003)

"...HOLES will no doubt speak clearly and appealingly to its intended teen audience..."
Variety - Todd McCarthy (04/21/2003)

"...The whole movie generates a surprising conviction....It doesn't condescend, and it founds its story on recognizable human nature....Davis has always been a director with a strong visual sense, and the look of HOLES has a noble, dusty loneliness..."

No Holes In This Story

I love it when the producers of a book turned film have the courage to believe in the original idea and stick to it. Happily that has happened with this film. Holes, based on the novel of the same title, by Louis Sachar, stays true to this riveting tale of Fate and second chances.

Stanley Yelnats gets sent to Camp Green Lake aftering being found guilty of a crime he didn't commit. For the Yelnats this is one more string of bad luck put on their family by Madame Zeroni when their no good, pig-stealing grandfather welched on a promise he'd made her many years ago.

The movie goes seamlessly back and forth through time filling in all the pieces of the puzzle that will lead Stanley to break his family's curse forever.

The film is beautifully cast with some big named stars lending a hand. My favorite is Patricia Artquette playing a heart-breaking Kate Barlow. Sigorney Weaver and Jon Voight are wonderfully mean and campy at the same time.

This is a wonderful movie for any age and there's nothing to worry about with your kids sitting there beside you.

Must Have!

I read the book and loved it and when the movie came out I was so eager to watch it. The movie did a great job staying close to the book and the story is great on the big screen. Starring Shia LaBeouf (TVs Even Stevens) as Stanley Yelnats. He does such a great job and really brings this character to life. This story has great twists in it that are really suprising. Very good ending! Great for any age and great for family night.

I'm speechless!

Based on Louis Sachar’s award-winning children’s book of the same name, "Holes" could be possibly one of the greatest movies I've watched in my lifetime. I remember watching this video at the movie theater as a teenager and considering the countless times I've watched this video it had never gotten old. This movie is perfect for the family and when I say perfect I mean that there are no imperfections whatsoever. The directing, camera angels, storyline - I'm absolutely speechless! This is definitely a must see regardless of your age!

Great, largely over-looked movie. Kids will enjoy it, but it is also a biting commentary on juvenile justice, zero-tolerance, & juvie boot camps. Some very funny performances, especially Jon Voight.
