Home on the Range (DVD, 2004)

Will Finn|Theatrical release: 2004 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

The American West is brought to the screen in vivid purple and blue animation in Disney's barnyard adventure HOME ON THE RANGE. With geometric patches representing a vast expanse of farmland, and landscapes ranging from rocky desert to lush green pastures, this classic cartoon--no Pixar influence here--is visually pleasing in its simplicity. The lively personalities of Roseanne Barr, Judi Dench, and Jennifer Tilly bring raucous fun to the three bovine heroines: Maggie (Barr)--a big brash prize-winning cow, Mrs. Caloway (Dench)--a refined and ladylike cow who won't be seen without her purple bonnet, and Grace (Tilly)--a New Age cow who swears by peaceful, holistic solutions. These girls are determined to save their farm from the greedy land baron Alameda Slim (Randy Quaid) and they set off on a trek as self-appointed bounty hunters to win the $750 prize for Slim's capture. Along the way they lock horns with the sheriff's horse Buck (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) who, in the end, helps them save the day. Catchy music by Bonnie Raitt and K.D. Lang adds to the fun-filled adventure of HOME ON THE RANGE, a movie that is sure to please family members of all ages.

Editorial reviews

"This throwback to old Disney cartoons is fun, rather than message-laden, with broad humor and entertaining action."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (04/09/2004)

"[The movie] has the genial friendliness of a 1940s singing cowboy movie..."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (04/02/2004)

"In many ways it's a breath of fresh air: solidly 2D, including its narrative. In equal measure it's a road comedy, western musical and good ole race against the clock."
Box Office - Tim Cogshell (05/01/2004)

"[T]he antics have a pleasing lightness of touch..."
Sight and Sound - Andrew Osmond (08/01/2004)

Enjoy the voices of Roseanne Barr and Steve Buscemi.
A very cute family film. Even as an adult I enjoyed sitting with my children and watching this movie.

Awesome Kids Movie

Created: 09/10/06
I purchased this DVD for my two & a half year old Daughter, because we could not find it in stores. they said it wasn't a popular movie, but my Daughter would tell you different, She sits and watches this sometimes as many as three or four times a day. it is a NON Violent animated movie the kids just love, I think because of the Average everyday animals in the movie. when my Daughter wants to watch it she says COWS DADDY, WATCH COWS. we originally rented it for her at a cost of $3.00 a day and we kept it for a week before finally returning it and paying late fee's. we then shopped around Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, K-Mart and even one of the VIDEO stores at the MALL of AMERICA no one had it and they almost all said it wasn't a big hit movie. but if not for E-Bay we still wouldn't have a copy, WHAT EVER IT is YOU CAN FIND IT ON E-BAY!
it keeps the kids mesmerized, they love the antics of the animals and just an all around Excellent movie. I'd recommend it for anyone.
if you have younger children it is a must buy.

Home on the Range DVD

Home on the Range is a fun movie for kids and adults. There is some adult humor in the movie that the kidos won't understand, but the movie is very fun and action packed. This movie takes place in the west. There is a bad guy that is trying to take all of the farms away from thier owners. Three cows that live on a farm are trying to help their owner by going after the bandit and saving the farm. It has a great ending, but I won't spoil it!

Don't listen to the "critics".

Created: 10/02/09
I'm not sure why critics generally panned this movie. Yes, it's old fashioned 2D, and yes, it is kind of quirky, but that's why my children and I love it. If you love any of the cartoons from the good old Warner Brothers days when cartoons were made to entertain both the children and adults at the same time, then you'll love this movie. The characters are excellent in this movie and the songs are quite silly, but easily get stuck in your head. I'm not a huge fan of modern era cartoons, but this one had me laughing out loud. This movie bucks the trend of modern children films and doesn't try to teach any moral lesson. Don't expect to walk away from this movie enlightened. This movie is pure entertainment for entertainment's sake and that's the real beauty of this film and probably why most critics panned it. Kudos to Disney on this film. They seemed to have stole a page right out of the old Warner Brothers playbook.
