Album Notes
Keane: Richard Hughes , Tom Chaplin, Tim Rice-Oxley.Personnel: Keane (programming); Tom Chaplin (vocals); Tim Rice-Oxley (piano, keyboards); Richard Hughes (drums); James Sanger (programming).Audio Mixer: Mark "Spike" Stent.Photographer: Alex Lake.Keane's open-hearted ambition on Hopes and Fears is audible on every song. Lead vocalist Tom Chaplin's rich vocals are as vibrant as any choir's, and track such as "This Is the Last Time," "Bend and Break," and "Can't Stop Now" reflect Keane's more savory, dramatic moments. Confidence bursts throughout, and for a band that has been around for seven years and has never released a studio full-length album until now, achieving nearly epic-like status is quite impressive. Keane obviously have the songs and they have a strong voice leading the front; however, Tim Rice-Oxley (piano/keyboards/bass) and Richard Hughes (drums) allow Hopes and Fears to come alive with glamour and without the sheen of slick studio production. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 - [T]here's plenty to keep the eyes welling up for a good 45 minutes...
Mojo

4 stars out of 5 -- [I]t remains a triumph of self-belief: Tom Chaplin's operatic vocal the perfect foil for Tim Rice-Oxley's relentlessly tuneful piano balladry.
Q

Keane's exceedingly pretty piano-based debut cruises fairly close to Coldplay attitude.

Hopes & Fears - Keane - who needs 3 guitars?

Created: 08/06/09
Keane's Hopes & Fears showcases the talent trio that take on rock pop without a gaggle of guitarists constantly rhythming and solo riffing the songs right to death. As with many modern day popular artists Keane's music has come to many people via use in Movie Soundtracks and TV Commercial music.
Keane's lead singer has a higher register than many are use to hearing in the USA music marketplace but that doesn't mean the boy can't sing. I have to agree with other reviewers that compare his voice with Eric Carmen (of Raspberries and solo work fame); and that is a compliment. The lad in Keane gets across expression and feeling quite well, and Keane's lyrics have a touch of the older-but-wiser been around the block feel to them. These lads know how to write, play, sing, you name it. Hopefully the cash-greedy Music Executives holding The Contract don't muddy Keane into a different direction or a different band member line-up. Keane could niche quite well and their music will express their personal growth as it takes place. If Music Exec Shirt N Ties mess with Keane's magic they may ruin the good thing that is better left alone.

CD is a great buy with more than just 1 good song like most.

Plus the story of Keane is a great one.
No Guitars here only Vocals, Piano and Percussion, these guys pull if off.

Tom has a fantastic voice

I have added Keane to my list of favorite bands.

They are so great

I heard Keane's song "Somewhere only we know" on the radio a few years ago. I loved it he first time I heard it. I bought "Hopes and Fears" for one song and hoping there would be some other good songs on it. I loved every last one so much. From start to finish it is an absolutely wonderful CD. The voice of Tom, the lead singer is so unique, I could listen to him all day. I highly recommend this CD and also "Under the Iron Sea", which is Keane's other album.

Keane yes, Coldplay not

Created: 01/06/06
Heard these guys on a web stream and decided to take a chance on the cd. I was
not dissapointed! They are compared to Coldplay and on a couple of songs they are quite similar but all in all they are different. Without any guitar they can still rock but in a calm kind of way. If you like Coldplay's quieter songs you will love this band. I can't wait to hear what or if they changed anything on their next release. Hope they come out with something new soon!

A very good album!

I bought this album because I wanted more from the band who sings one of my fave songs--"Somewhere Only We Know." The rest of the album isn't as good as that one song, but it is good overall...
