Steve Pink, John Cusack, Rob Corddry|Theatrical release: 2010 | Rating: R

Movie synopsis

Disappointed at the way their lives have turned out, four longtime friends reunite at the ski resort where they used to party and find themselves transported back to the year 1986 by a magical jacuzzi. Adam (John Cusack), Lou (Rob Corddry), Nick (Craig Robinson), and Jacob (Clark Duke) have all seen better days; Adam's and Nick's love lives are in the dumps, Lou is clinging to his hard-partying past, and video-game addict Jacob can't even muster the courage to walk outside. A fun stay at the ski resort where the gang made some of their best memories seems like just the thing to cheer everyone up, but after a night of heavy drinking in the hot tub, the four friends wake up to find they're about to live through the '80s a second time. Determined not to make the same mistakes twice, Adam, Lou, Nick, and Jacob decide to take full advantage of the unique opportunity presented to them, and create the lives they've always wanted. Chevy Chase, Crispin Glover, and Lizzy Caplan co-star.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[With] a crush of very cool '80s references, Cusack chief among them' some gross-out moments that are genius...Oh, and about a billion laughs..."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (03/26/2010)

"[T]here is a brilliant send-up of the prom scene where Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly invented rock 'n' roll."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (03/26/2010)

"[A] good-natured raunchfest....With Glover on hand and Chevy Chase as a time-portal repairman in a modified Christopher Lloyd role, all that's missing is the DeLorean."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (03/26/2010)

"With sharp riffs on the intersection of '80s pop culture and 21st-century culture, this TIME MACHINE is a fun dip into a pool of memories..." -- Grade: B
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (04/02/2010)

"MACHINE succeeds largely on the chemistry of its leads: '80s icon of uber sensitivity Cusack's puppy-dog earnestness contrasts nicely with Robinson's dispirited deadpan understatement and Corddry's relentless, needling comic aggression."
A.V. Club - Nathan Rabin (03/25/2010)

3 stars out of 4 -- "Corddry here achieves a level of comic confidence that seems almost uncanny....HOT TUB TIME MACHINE, which wants nothing more than to be a screwball farce, succeeds beyond any expectations suggested by the title..."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (03/24/2010)

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "Picture a randy teen comedy clad in day-glo, but consistent with today's improved hindsight and looser decency standards."
Premiere - Premiere Staff (03/24/2010)

"It's a kick to watch Corddry go nuts and Robinson wow a 1980s crowd by singing the Black Eyed Peas..."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (04/15/2010)

3 stars out of 4 -- "HOT TUB TIME MACHINE simmers right along like so many Jacuzzi bubbles popping with a carefully calibrated mix of sight gags, sex jokes and baby boomer references..."
Washington Post (03/26/2010)

3 stars out of 5 -- "HOT TUB's writers keep things simple, transporting its four loser heroes back to one weekend in 1986....[With a] playful, HANGOVER-like rapport..."
Total Film - Neil Smith (04/15/2010)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Crispin Glover's limb-jeopardizing skits are a highlight..."
Empire - Dan Jolin (09/01/2010)

amazing. i laughed durring the entire movie. great cast. movie is about 3 grown men and cusaks nephew who have done nothing with their lives and decide to go back to their favorite hangout from when they were younger when a friend tries to commit suicide. when there they get into a hot tub which turns into a time machine and they all go back in time to where they were in highschool. in the 80's. now in the past they must do everything the same which includes some things they wish they could change. while trying to figure out chevy chase's clues on how to fix the hot tub so that they can get back to their present time. however when the time comes do they want to go back to pathetic lives? yes this movie sounds cheesy, which it is, but if you are simply looking for a fun movie where you don't have to think and wil make laugh your ass off, this is the movie to watch. i love this movie.

Travel back to 1986

Four losers head off to their favorite vacation spot from when they were younger to try to relive some of the good life. When they arrive the find out that all the good times have passed them by and the resort is run down and falling apart. They hop into the Hot Tub and are transported back to 1986 where they get to re-live one of the worse weekends of their lives. Only this time things will be different.

This movie was fun, but it was not nearly as funny as I expected it to be. It was interesting to look back at how sad everyone was back in the 80s with the strange clothes, hair and attitude toward life.

Hot tub time machine stars: John Cusack as Adam, Clark Duke as Jacob, Craig Robinson as Nick Webber, Rob Corddry as Lou (The four main stars of the film) and Sebastian Stan as Blaine, Lizzy Caplan as April, Collette Wolfe as Kelly, Crispin Glover as Phil, Chevy Chase as The Hot Tub Repair Man, Kellee Stewart as Courtney Agnou-Webber, Lyndsy Fonseca as Jennie, Charlie McDermott as Chaz, Crystal Lowe as Zoe, Jessica Paré as Tara and William Zabka as Rick Steelman.

It was entertaining but I would probably rent this one instead of buying it.

6 The Movie
An entertaining but deeply flawed comedy
6 The Video
The overly dark, saturated transfer actually manages to dampen the impact of a few sight gags.
7 The Audio
An underwhelming mix, but better mixed than most sex comedies out there.
3 The Extras
A disappointing "Unrated" version and an equally unimpressive collection of deleted scenes.

Leave logic and morals at the door, then it is good

Like the title says it is not a good idea to think too much when viewing this one. If you are science fiction oriented you might be shocked at the logic behind the time aspects and if you expect a family movie you are out of luck.
On the other hand this movie is perfect escapist enjoyment. Just go with the "plot" and enjoy the show.

Hot Tub Time Machine Not So Hot

Created: 09/08/10
This film starts out with a great premise. Traveling in time back to the 80s. Having been in my early twenties during that period I thought this movie would be entertaining for me. While the movie did have quite a few laughs I found the extensive use of the "F word" to be very distracting. There are thousands of words in the english language and many more funny than that. I did like the bit about Crispin Glovers arm. That was very funny and creative.
Overall however I would have to say the film was a bit of a disapointment. Rent but dont buy.
If you want to see a top notch buddy comedy get The Hangover instead.
