This is one Handy Device
Created: 09/02/10
I bought the HP IPAQ a month ago, after having read extensively on palm devices. This one, for an older technology, got the best reviews for battery life and basic Windows for the Pocket PC functionality.
I didn't want to put my whole life on my phone - I believe in keeping my email, contacts, calendar, etc. private. This thing syncs to my Windows Outlook 2007 on my PC, and allows me to seamlessly sync my email, calendar, to-do list, and more, PLUS I've got Word, Excel, and Windows Media Player right there!
I do video production for a living, and I can drop my latest work on the IPAQ so that wherever I go, I've got my demo reel in my pocket. I purchased a 2gb SD card, and I've now got 2 gig for video, photos, PDFs (yes, there's a free PDF viewer available for it), and there's all sorts of free software out there that can be installed easily.
The only downside was the battery. Within days of getting it, I realized that the battery was toast (this is a 2004 device). I bought one on Ebay for about 10 bucks, and, although HP said it would void the warranty (what warranty?), I was able to open up the case and replace the battery in about 15 minutes. It now holds a charge like a champ!

Developer's handheld
Created: 17/11/08
MS Visual Studio 2005 has everything needed to program the pocketPC mobile 2003SE. Great device for people who like to have access to a capable developer program. Palm pilot users have codewarrior but by the time I could afford my copy of codewarrier the IIIc I own lost all of its usefulness for lack of USB port and limited memory.
Have not found too many programming examples for the unit yet. I have an application that uses a rs232 communications port like the rz1710 has but sometimes with MS's documented interfaces pieces of the puzzle can be left out making difficult for individual programmers like myself to publish finished code.
The rz1710 has a sd memory slot not compatible with sdhc memory cards but may take a 4gb standard sd card (have not tried it yet but will work with a 2gb card).
Only problem is the lack of programs shareware/software and otherwise, seems like much more written for the palm pilot than the PPC. MS Activesync works flawlessly although can only sync with the top level contacts folder of MS Outlook. If you use subfolders like I do you have to move all your contacts to a single folder not too much of a problem, the work around I use is that I keep duplicate sets of contacts, one under their respective subfolders and one large merged folder in the default "Contacts" folder.
Should have joined in the palm pilot programming bandwagon when palm pilot came out but little hiring of programmers in area. Better late than never!
I should mention one more thing comparing it to yesterday's technology the character recognition of the rz1710 is a huge improvement over the graffiti Alphabet stuff a few years back.
purchased in Nov 2008
other PIM owned.
IIIc purchased date:unknown - still has a good battery!

ultra mobile computor

This great electronic gizmo is really a computor that fits in your pocket. It functions as a word processor, email reader, mp3 player, video player, book reader as well as a great contact list and task or appointment calendar. The other thing I love is that I can hand write notes on the screen or use it as an audio recorder and can download it all to my desktop at the end of the day.
It has more than paid for itself with just the free e-books that I have downloaded, kept me entertained with games while waiting for appointments and kept my many medical appointments and medications straight as I underwent cancer treatment.
I loved it so much that when my original of over 5 years was damaged beyond repair I bought 2 more so that if one ever needed to go for servicing I would have a spare.
I am over 60 years old but don't know how I managed before I had my pocket pc.
