Movie synopsis

Loosely based on the novel from Isaac Asimov, I, ROBOT is an action-packed, CGI-laden thrill ride from director Alex Proyas (THE CROW). Set in 2035, Will Smith stars as Chicago law enforcer Detective Del Spooner. Called upon to investigate the mysterious suicide of scientist Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), Spooner deduces that Lanning didn't kill himself but was, in fact, murdered. Lanning worked for the US Robotics headquarters, where he constructed friendly robots designed to help humans with mundane tasks. Lanning's creations are prevalent all over the city, and have been fully integrated into the culture. They are allegedly programmed not to harm humans, but as Spooner digs deeper, his investigations lead him to a new type of robot that Lanning was working on before his death, and one of these models--the highly charismatic Sonny--becomes the prime suspect in the case. Spooner bears a grudge against robots due to an unfortunate incident, so his case against Sonny is met with shrugs of indifference from colleagues who know his prejudices all too well. Fortunately he meets an ally, and a romantic interest, in Dr. Susan Calvin (Bridget Moynahan), who agrees to help him. As Sonny is cured of his violent tendencies, the other robots amass across the city, working on the assumption that they need to control humanity in order to safeguard its future.Director Proyas unleashes a fearsome arsenal of special effects, while Spooner and Calvin chase the errant robots all over the city. Sonny's facial features and voice are digitally manipulated from the actor Alan Tudyk, lending an unnerving element of humanity to the character. Smith and Moynahan give convincing performances throughout, and as the action races towards a nail-biting conclusion, the message of the movie suggests that technologies built to help mankind could also provide its downfall.

This thriller stars Will Smith as Del Spooner, a technology-wary cop investigating the murder of a scientist in mid-21st century Chicago, who isn't the perfect man for the job … but he takes it on anyway. Aided by expert Dr. Susan Calvin, Spooner discovers that an android might be the culprit -- and realizes the entire human race could be at the mercy of machines.

I, Robot - Not the book, but quite good

Created: 16/10/08
"I, Robot" is a cyberpunk thriller with plenty of storyline to keep you interested. Will Smith plays "Detective Spooner", a public servant who does not trust the robots that have become an integral part of society. The plot is a mix of "man goes on a journey", "boy meets girl", and a little "capture and escape". There is a decent amount of violence, but mostly gun play resulting in a bunch of robots getting thrashed by Spooner.

The movie carries a few themes "suggested" by Issac Asimov's book. However, those who have read the book should not expect to watch the book on the big screen. Instead, the reader should consider the world created by Issac Asimov only as the setting of the movie, as the compendium defining the rules that guide the story forward. Then, the reader will also be able to enjoy a great movie in addition to an even greater book.

I was most impressed by the way cutting edge technology and architecture were inserted along-side existing knowledge and construction. This theme continued throughout the movie with humans and robots, old robots and new robots, and ultimately good robots and bad robots. When you watch the movie, you'll feel that the robot future isn't too far off.

I hope you enjoy "I, Robot".

Imaginative, Suspenseful Action Flick

Created: 18/11/05
Caveat: I am not an Asimov or sci-fi purist. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, especially the special effects. It's a very imaginative and suspenseful story. Lots of action. Surround sound/DTS is great. Sonny the robot rules -- and almost steals the show. Beltrami's soundtrack is excellent.

I ROBOT

The movie is an understandable sci-fi story with Will Smith playing the lead character. Smith plays the role of a detective that doesn't take a lot of things at face value, unlike most everyone else around him. Although his character is a younger person, he seems to have an interest in things from 20 years ago (from his position in time). The special effects are just the right amount and are not over done. If you are a Will Smith fan; or a sci-fi fan, the movie is good. If you are a Smith AND a sci-fi fan the movie is VERY good.

I, Robot

I, Robot is a fantastic movie if you enjoy Will Smith and science fiction movies. The action is fantastic and the concept behind the movie is equally fantastic! The special effects are beyond description. If you watch the little things you will see some awesome computer generated graphics. If you are hoping for a movie that will win an Academy Award, don't bother. However, if you want a few hours of high energy, heart pounding excitement, your search is over!
