The Ice Harvest (DVD, 2006, Widescreen)

Harold Ramis, John Cusack, Billy Bob Thornton|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Based on the novel by Scott Phillips, THE ICE HARVEST is a comic film noir set in very cold and icy Wichita, Kansas. John Cusack turns in another fine performance as Charlie Arglist, a soft-spoken lawyer who works for local mob boss Bill Guerrard (Randy Quaid). Charlie hangs out in strip clubs, pines after femme fatale Renata (Connie Nielsen), rarely sees his kids, and basically watches life happen all around him. Ready for a change, he and the much more hardened Vic Cavanaugh (Billy Bob Thornton) steal $2.1 million from Guerrard and plan to play it cool before leaving town, trying not to create suspicion. All they need to do is make it through Christmas Eve--but that's not going to be easy for Charlie, who spends the long night getting caught up in a series of very funny, very dangerous, and very bloody events that unfold while sweet Christmas carols echo in the background. Reminiscent of such stylish modern noirs as RED ROCK WEST and FARGO, THE ICE HARVEST features a clever script by Oscar-winner Robert Benton and Pulitzer Prize-winner Richard Russo, and was directed by Harold Ramis, the former SCTV star and Ghostbuster who has helmed such successful films as CADDYSHACK, GROUNDHOG DAY, and ANALYZE THIS. The acting is uniformly excellent--including Mike Starr as hit man Roy Gelles, who never shows his face--but Oliver Platt runs away with the film as Pete Van Heuten, an old friend of Charlie's who stole his family and now is an obnoxious, hysterical, pathetic drunken fool with a good heart.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[A]n acerbic, unpretentious black-comedy thriller, directed by Harold Ramis with mature glee, and written by Richard Russo and Robert Benton with grown-up literacy..." -- Grade: A-
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (12/02/2005)

4 stars out of 5 -- "THE ICE HARVEST is a modest movie, but worth savouring for its throwaway wit and bruised, rueful cynicism."
Uncut - Tom Charity (03/01/2006)

"[Thornton] is as adept as ever at deadpan heartlessness....The most subversive element in the movie is the way Ramis and co. allow moments of real poignancy to occasionally pierce the film's veneer of studied cynicism."
Sight and Sound - Leslie Felperin (03/01/2006)

Set in Wichita, Kansas, The Ice Harvest is a nice film, featuring another fine performance by John Cusack. Basically, he and Billy Bob Thornton have to make it through Christmas Eve, and they are scott free with a cool 2 Million they have stolen. If you like John Cusack, then you will love this movie, but if you're not a fan, you might just think it to be average. Good movie, give it a try! Surprisingly Great Movie

I gotta say, I wasn't expecting much from this movie, but I have to say this was one of the best movies I have seen in awhile. I would describe it has a dark comedy/mystery. John Cusack played his role wonderfully and Billy Bob Thornton was just quirky enough to make the whole thing work. Yes, there is Sex, nudity, and violence, which is why it is rated R, so no, don't let your kids watch it, but go ahead and indulge yourself...this is a great Movie with some great twists and turns. Don't forget to watch the extras, they are worth it!!!

Clever, Witty, Masterful

Why this movie didn't do better in theater release should go down as one of the greatest film cinema mysteries of the decade. "The Ice Harvest" is fresh, upbeat and charismatically hilarious from the start to the last breathe. Cusack and Thornton couldn't be better. Thornton is at the Top-Of-His-Game (comedic like "Badder Santa") and the movie setting holds you in a poise that makes you "want to be there". Ice Harvest is pricelessly clever. The wit, humor, settings and dark comedy has not been matched since preceding classics like "Pulp Fiction". I didn't go 5 minutes without feeling thoroughly engrossed and entertained with this "Plot Gone Wrong" and I hung on every word, and they never let me down. This is one to watch again and again and again. Applauds to the Producers. You won't find this film qualtiy again in a GOOD dark comedy for a decade !!!!

John Cusack and Billy Bob Thorton make an excellent pair in this movie.
John Cusack plays a Mobster Lawyer. He steals $2million from his mob boss by skimming the tills. Billy Bob Thorton is his partner in crime.
The interesting part of this movie is that it all takes place on Christmas Eve. I can't quite figure out how this pertains to the rest of the plot.

Not one of the best movies I have seen by a long shot. This movie is rather poorly made in my opinion, and doesnt really have much of a plot. Also, this isn't a movie you would want a kid or a young teenager to see. This film has a considerable amount of "random nudity". When John Cusack is talking to someone in a strip club (where a lot of the movie is set) there are completely naked strippers dancing in the background. If you are offended by nudity or very strong language this is definately not the movie for you. If, however, this doesn't bother you, you might want to pick this one up. Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on it, but that is just my opinion. However, there is a positive to this movie, John Cusack plays a decent part. He acts pretty well in this movie so if you are a John Cusack fan, and language and nudity don't offend you, pick this one up.
