A founder member of the groundbreaking rap band NWA, Eazy E later feuded with his fellow artists (even going so far as to simulate the murder of one of them, Dr. Dre, on 1993's "It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa"), and courted controversy with murderous jibes at the police and the F.B.I.In what is also something of a tribute to the violent and creative impulses of its creator, IMPACT OF A LEGEND still sounds fresh today. Cuts such as "Cock the 9," "Ruthless Life," and "Still F*****" retain their dramatic impact, and in places E's rapping sounds almost musical--though not enough to obscure the ugliness of lines such as "A bitch is a bitch..." Although these tracks were all recorded in the mid-'90s, the sound is vintage rather than dated; the rap world may have caught up with Eazy E's vision, but it hasn't yet surpassed it.
