The Incredibles (DVD, 2005, Widescreen)

Brad Bird|Theatrical release: 2004 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Combining a family-oriented superhero adventure with the brilliant animation of Disney's Pixar (the creators of MONSTERS INC. and FINDING NEMO), THE INCREDIBLES charts new territory in the technical wizardry of computer-generated cartoons. Using complex angles and a filmic sensibility, the animation feels like live action, and smart techniques such as cuts to "grainy film stock" give this movie instant sophistication. Writer-director Brad Bird, with his creative storytelling and well-paced character development, does the rest. This tale is set in a slightly futuristic society where superheroes are no longer appreciated (Read: But I didn't want to be saved!) and are forced to assume a very low profile. So, for Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson), his wife Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), and his three fledgling superhero kids, maintaining a lifestyle of mediocrity in order to appear normal causes constant friction. When the opportunity suddenly arises for the Incredibles to use their powers to fight evil, it's trial-by-fire to learn to work as a superteam. Together they must stop the maniacal Syndrome (Jason Lee) from unleashing a murderous robot in a big city. Fast action and violence involving large explosions make this a film that is better suited for older children rather than the very little ones. Yet family themes and comic episodes prevail, with eclectic characters like Edna the fashion designer (voiced by Bird himself) and the iceman Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) adding extra moments of fun.

Editorial reviews

"[V]isually splendid and ethically serious....The movie is also refreshingly quiet, using music sparingly and showing as much attention to aural nuance as it does to visual detail."
New York Times - A. O. Scott (11/05/2004)

"[A] piece of animation that's involving across a spectrum of comedy, action, even drama....Blessedly funny, there is also a surprising air of poignancy about much of it..."
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (11/05/2004)

"[O]ne of the year's most clever and visually arresting computer-animated films, enlivened by a well-developed and credible cast of characters who just happen to be superheroes."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (11/05/2004)

"[A] great story, a rich micro-universe of pixel-driven cartoon characters with more depth, complexity, and emotional maturity than those in most live-action dramas....Indeed incredible."
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (11/12/2004)

"[A] film that breaks fresh ground....Bird has crafted a film -- one of the year's best -- that doesn't ring cartoonish, it rings true."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (11/25/2004)

"[Bird's] ingenious self-penned script is heaving with brilliantly realised characters, snide putdowns and sharp one-liners that enhance the head-spinning action sequences with razor-sharp wit."
Uncut - Andrew Sumner (01/01/2005)

"[A] light comedy at heart....[The film] manages a great deal of genuine excitement..."

Pixar makes another Incredible movie

Created: 19/01/06
Ever wonder what happens when super heroes retire? Well wonder no more, because the great minds at Pixar have struck again with a movie that is fun for the whole family and very entertaining. The action is great in this movie and visually incredible. I don't know anyone who hasn't loved this movie after they watched it.

As with all Pixar movies, the additional features on the DVD are great and really add to the experience. This 2 Disc collectors edition is great. The first disc is the Theatrical Widescreen of the movie adn has the filmmaker's audio commentary available. The second disc has the added "Jack-Jack Attack" featurette which is funny entertaining and funny. The short Boundin' is also included which was nominated for an Academy Award and of course those very funny bloopers adn blunders. There are deleted scenes and and alternate opening, top secret files on the supers, and a behind the scenes look.

A must have for any family.

incredible fun

How about a cartoon that works for adults and for children? How about technical wizardry that is good enough to ignore- because you really came for the cartoon, not to see how it was made?

This is a lot of fun.

You'll be glad you're watching on DVD, though, because you'll go crazy trying to identify the voice actors. That's Samuel Jackson as the cool super hero buddy, and Wallace Shawn as the yap-dog boss. Fans of NPR's THIS AMERICAN LIFE may or may not recognize Sara Vowell, but Craig Nelson and Holly Hunter are Mr. and Mrs. Incredible. Elizabeth Pena is the villain's seductive assistant.

Probably the best of all, though, are the James Bond cliches. Every one of them is there- down to the "monologuing" villains, the monorail, the rockets, the jungle hideaway. And, of course, that beautiful assistant.

This is a great film for anyone, not just kids or parents. Buy it, enjoy it. But don't lend it out, because you may not get it back...

Disney & Pixar's The Incredibles DVD

Created: 05/05/08
I purchased the DVD of the Disney/Pixar movie The Incredibles because I am a huge fan of all animation but Pixar especially. Some of the things the animators can do with computers just astounds me and The Incredibles is another shining example of their work. This movie includes all of the hard to tackle aspects of animation like hair, fabric and water just to name a few and they pull it off in true Pixar form. The DVD includes extras like short films 'Jack Jack Attack' and 'Boundin'', deleted scenes and a making of special. Overall just a fantastic movie and well worth owning.

Pixar does it again! Another must see family movie!

Created: 24/09/05
The storytellers and annimators at Pixar studies have produced yet another classic. This time the superheros from your childhood are back to save the world one more time. Those in mid-life can definately identify with the main characters of this movie who feel like their better days are behind them. But of course it isn't so as they back into the action as much as ever.

HITS: Beautiful computer graphics, well written story, comedic elements, musical score.

MISSES: Tugs less at your heart than other Pixar films and instead appeals at your adventurous side instead.

PARENTAL WARNING: For those with small children, unlike earlier Pixar films this is rated PG. With that comes some scenes where children are put in danger as well as some graphic explosions. I would recommend children be at least 5 - 7 years old.

Very Funny For Adults and Children Alike

Created: 28/09/06
Disney Pixar, as usual, did another outstanding job. The Incredibles appeals to both adults and children and is a very funny movie. There is nothing overly scary for children - no monsters or ghoulish characters, which is always good.
Perhaps one of the best features of the DVD is a short film featuring baby Jack, Jack. It shows what happens when he is left in the care of the babysitter, while his mom and siblings are out saving dad.
I would definately recommend adding this movie to your Disney library.
