    Publisher's Note

It all starts with a birthday present Omri doesn't even want -- a small plastic Indian of no use to him at all. But when an old wooden cupboard and a special key bring the unusual toy to life, Omri's Indian becomes his most important secret: precious, dangerous, wonderful, and above all, magical.

When Omri's plastic Indian, put in an unusual cupboard overnight, comes to life, Omri has a new friend who can teach him about another culture and another time.

This is one of my favorite children's books. I know the Indian speaks in a very sterotypical way, but there is accurate information about Native Americans of his time period. The story, however, focuses on the young boy Omri learning that the Indian is a real person, and caring for him is a serious responsibility. It is told with gentle humor and suspense.

Pretty good book, I read it as a child and now wish for my son to read as I did. Difference is he finished the book in two days. He did not put it down. It took me about 2 weeks. I am glad he enjoyed it. He is now interested in reading the series.
