The International (DVD, 2009)

Tom Tykwer, Clive Owen, Naomi Watts|Theatrical release: 2009 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Released in a post-globalization economy teetering on the brink of a depression, THE INTERNATIONAL admirably stays in step with its time. Screenwriter Eric Singer hangs this man-against-the-machine action-thriller not on the Russians, North Koreans, or turncoats in the C.I.A., but on the I.B.B.C., an international bank that wields power through crippling debt. With villains like these, viewers fretting over their own mortgage rates will find themselves rooting zealously for these crooked financiers to fall hard. Interpol agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and his partner, New York Assistant D.A. Eleanor Whitman (the somewhat underused Naomi Watts), are consistently stonewalled by local law enforcement in their attempt to close in on the bank’s insiders. The conflict deepens two-fold as Salinger discovers not only how wide the bank’s nefarious influence spreads, but how loosely he will act within legal boundaries to get his man. Owen elevates the at-times standard espionage plot devices with his now trademark (but always riveting) me-against-the-worldisms: his hard-edged focus and steely moral clarity. Armin Mueller-Stahl also stands out in the cast as a weathered ex-communist revolutionary now finding himself in the epicenter of capitalist corruption. With spirited but tight direction, Tom Tykwer (of RUN, LOLA, RUN and THE PRINCESS AND THE WARRIOR fame) emphasizes longer action sequences and a more developed narrative arc than many contemporary post-BOURNE IDENTITY thrillers. The film’s centerpiece--an incredible shoot-out in the Guggenheim Museum with flying plaster, shattering installations, and shifting loyalties--reads like a disaster movie for the highbrow set as art lovers everywhere will experience a perverse thrill watching the museum’s famed spiral shot up by I.B.B.C. thugs.

The International

This is a story of intrige, suspense and an action thriller. Interpol agent
Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and New York asst. district attorney Eleanor
Whitman (Naomi Watts) team up to expose a global financial institutions
money laundering, arms dealing and other illegal rackets. As the pair race
from New York to Milan and beyond to pursue their case, they soon discover
that the ruthless bank will stop at nothing to continue its profitable
activities (probably like some banks these days). The fact that Louis s
father was killed while working for the bank he is investigating makes for
a personal point, and he goes undercover to work inside the bank and rapidly
rises to a high position during his investigation-although the bank is
secretly promoteing him so he can take a fall-similiar to what happened to
his father. Good movie, will fill an evening with some fast paced entertainment. Best for people that enjoy business activity or appreciate
the inner working of Wall Street and international banking (if you liked
"WALL STREET" you will probably like this one also).

Boring

Created: 08/06/09
In the movie "The International", Interpol Agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) fight to bring to justice a very powerful bank. It seems as though they are fighting against all agencies included their own to bring down the bank. The bank is financing terrorist organization and war to collect on the debt. Louis and Eleanor are in a deadly cat and mouse game with the bank.

This movie was extremely boring in my opinion. I fell asleep literally 3 times and it took me almost 4 days to finish it. It seems as though I have seen this movie a hundred times, it is just terribly unoriginal. There was absolutely no character development and the story line was difficult to follow. The ending makes it even worse, it is very confusing will have most asking "So what happened".

Of course this is just my personal opinion and I give it about a 6/10.

Well-made Government Thriller

Created: 14/08/09
The International, a decent thriller that should have been dazzling, is nothing if not topical. And sexy, too, thanks to the star presence of intrepid Clive Owen as Louis Salinger, an Interpol agent who teams up with Naomi Watts as Manhattan assistant district attorney Eleanor Whitman, to track down bank skulduggery that doesn't stop at murder. IBBC, the Luxembourg bank at the center of the movie, resembles the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, a Pakistan operation that conducted a reign of terror for three decades until 1991. But citing historical precedent is hardly necessary now when banking misdeeds are front and center in all our lives.

This is by far the best corrupt corporation espionage film of the past decade! The plot, the acting, & the directing all were truley deserving of five stars...
Clive Owen's commanding lead as a determined Interpol investigator is magnificent! Naomi Watts also gives a stupendous performance as FBI agent...
This movie was an absolutly fantastic rollercoaster ride thru out europe, to NYC, to Istanbul's Grand Bazaar. The Guggenheim Museum shoot out scene literally glued me to my seat!

The International 2 Stars Only

Created: 04/08/10
After watching this movie I now know why I do not go to the movies anymore with average movie costing $ 9 or more. It always great to have options I saw this on my SAt Tv and I did watch whole thing. Boring is the word poor old Clive he never did explain why he looked like a tramp all way during movie. Plus gal getting hit by car and walking away. I do not think so bad guys were to many to count and movie in general was to jumpy for me. So if you going buy this DVD get it on Ebay. But if you pay over the cost of movie ticket you are getting rip off
