Album Notes
Personnel: Biff Byford (vocals, background vocals); Doug Scarratt, Paul Quinn (guitar); Matthias Ulmer (keyboards); Nigel Glockler (drums); Toby Jepson, Hacky Hackmann (background vocals).Recording information: Twilight Hall Studios, Krefeld, Germany.Photographer: Kai Swillus. One of the last fervent flag-wavers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Saxon unleashes its 18th studio release. One of the most dynamic and epic albums of the band's career, INTO THE LABYRINTH combines the Deep Purple-meets-AC/DC barroom rock with progressive, near-Teutonic metal anthems. The elements that truly make the album special are Biff Byford's laid-back, swaggering vocal style and Charlie Bauerfeind's (Blind Guardian, Helloween, Gamma Ray) rich production. INTO THE LABYRINTH closes with a stripped-down, bluesy rendition of the fan favorite "Coming Home," the original version of which appeared on 2001's KILLING GROUND.

Editorial Reviews
4 stars out of 5 -- The building, rhythmic, choir-like intro to opener 'Battalions Of Steel' soon shifts into classic speed metal with a nod to Manowar.
Record Collector

When you hear searing opener 'Battalions Of Steel' paired with fist-raising singalong-ready second track 'Live To Rock' you're already preparing yourself for the best Saxon album in years.

WHAT CAN I SAY? I LIKE SAXON.I RALLY DO BUT THIS ONE DOESN'T SHOW A WHOLE LOT OF IMPROVEMENT FROM BEFORE.PRETTY MUCH "BY THE NUMBERS" METAL WITHOUT ANY PARTICULARLY MEMORABLE STAND OUT TRACKS.ADEQUATELY RECORDED AND PLAYED BUT SORT OF FORGETTABLE.MIGHT BE BETTER WHEN PLAYED LIVE BUT SAXON HASN'T TOURED IN USA SINCE THE "KILLING GROUND" CD AND IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THEY'LL BE HERE FOR THIS ONE EITHER.A PITY AS THEY'RE A PRETTY DYNAMIC OUTFIT ONSTAGE DESPITE THE AGE OF THE BAND.FOR A BETTER SAXON "FIX" REVISIT "UNLEASH THE BEAST" OR "LIONHEART" CDS.......

Saxon is brilliant as always. They unleash their aggressive heay metal with a bit of good ol' fashioned rock. Wonderful.
