Movie synopsis

Don Siegel's cult masterpiece, interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism, is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell, a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks, he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira, his nurse, Sally (Jean Willes), explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home, claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents, temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist, is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belicec (King Donovan), who begs him to come over and take a look at the strange mannequinlike figure that's suddenly appeared on his pool table. This exceptionally well written and directed fable, the ultimate comment on the subtly coercive conformity of the 1950s, may be Siegel's best film, and it is undoubtedly one of the most exciting science fiction films ever made.

Great Sci-Fi Classic for the Pod Generation!

Created: 04/09/06
A great sci-fi classic that has been remade a couple of times already. This one is the original and even if you watch the remakes this one deserves to be seen. There is something creepy about old back and white movies anyway (at least to me) that make horror movies more effective. I think it is the lack of special effects and relying more on mood, music and script.

Emotionless shells are replacing the citizens of a California town. At first the town doc puts it down as paranoia - but is it paranoia when they're really after you? Plant-like pods enclose copies of the citizens and the duplicates kill the originals when they sleep. The doc and a small group of citizens decide to leave town and warn the world but they are too late.

This film has been seen as an allegory of communism and even as criticism for the US government at the time. Whatever people saw or want to see under the surface of the movie is just another artistic layer of this great sci-fi movie. The first one to make you scared to fall asleep - take that Freddy!

Not that great

I saw the 1978 remake of this movie when I was a kid (at the theatre), and loved it. Very suspenseful, and gave you that "hopeless" feeling that you were doomed. I recently purchased the 1978 version and have watched it repeatedly. So, I decided to buy the original version, which I had never seen before, and was a little disappointed.

You could hardly tell the human "clones" were clones! The first clone shown in the movie was someone's uncle. The niece claimed he had "no feelings, no emotions", but when the doctor went to see him he was smiling and smoking a pipe. They didn't really show that much of the "clones" and most of that part of the movie was implied. In the 1978 remake, they relied much more heavily on showing the clones and their activities, which made it much more easier to believe that something evil was really happening. It made it seem like a much more hopeless situation for the surviving humans. The music was also much better in the 1978 version. They also showed very little of the "pods" that took over your body. In the 1978 remake, they were all over, and when you saw one next to a body, you knew it was going to take that person over!

It wasn't a bad movie, just not that great ...

INVASION !

Created: 09/02/10
My recent purchase, on ebay, of the 1950's movie INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS was rewarding. The DVD arrived quickly and well packaged and was in very nice condition, too. I have yet to be disappointed in ANY item I've ever purchased on ebay ! This movie was one of the best Sci-Fi movies of the 1950's. Actor Keven McCarthy leads a fit cast in this great story about an alien intrusion into our society. This movie is considered by many to be one of the top ten SCI-FI "flicks" of all time, in spite of it's age ! I have loved it ever since I first saw it in a movie theater in the 1950's. I've had it in my video tape collection, reformatted for TV screen, for years but it is so much better on DVD with the full screen view letterboxed so that I now see everything that the movie house viewers saw so long ago ! Excellent movie !! Excellent purchase !!

Great old b/w thriller!

Created: 30/04/10
The original that inspired three remakes. Being in b/w I think helps set the mood. A suspenseful movie about an alien invasion with no space ships, no men in monster costumes and no CGI special effects. They don't make 'em like this anymore! Interesting special feature interview that talks about the beginning and ending that was added after an audience viewing. A classic!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Created: 08/11/06
I'm in my second (third?) childhood and like to buy movies that I remember from my first one. This is the original, a "golden oldie", far better in my opinion than the remakes. Shot in B&W and on a low budget, it is still scary. The plot line is coherent, the acting is good. And it's not a parody of either communism or Eisenhower conformity - Kevin McCarthy, the star, says in an interview that it was probably a parody of Madison Avenue advertising!
