CNET Editors' review

Good
  • THE GOOD

Responsive processor; ergonomic; removable battery; intuitive Windows Mobile operating system; impressive integration with Windows Media Player 10.0 and Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE); built-in kickstand; decent battery life.

  • THE BAD

Poor built-in speaker; pricey; no recording capability; no programmable preset buttons; no higher-capacity option; as with all PMCs, you can't create video playlists.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

Although the PMC-120 is a much better device than its Linux-based brother, the PMP-120, it's not the best Portable Media Center device available.

Portable Media Center Iriver PMC-120

Created: 07/06/06
The PMC-120 media player is a well constructed instrument. Battery life did not yield as much time as advertised when playing full length video movies which is whate I bought it for. Also the other main deficiency is the contrast and brightness dimishing at a viewing angle of the screen other than direct. Its viewable but if you change the angle from direct view, the quality falls off.
I purchased the Portable Media Center Dream'eo model Enza for my spouse, and in my opinion the Dreameo is a better machine. The contrast is better, the brightness stays intact even after changing the viewing angle. The battery life is decent, its smaller and it uses the same Microsoft portable media operating system. I recommend the Dreameo over the Iriver.

Nice Device, Inscrutable Interface, Poor Support

Created: 15/03/09
I really like the device, but I have found it very challenging to load stuff onto it. First I had to downgrade from Windows Media Player 11 to 10 in order to operate it. Then I got all kinds of error messages trying to load video. Music was pretty easy, but after a couple of years of grappling with my IPod and ITunes I think I have every song in five formats. The worst has been photos. I have spent at least ten hours trying to figure out how to load photos on this thing, with no success. The IRiver Support page is awful, the WMP support page instructs me to follow links that don't exist in WMP 10, and the email I sent to IRiver support hasn't been answered yet (although to be fair it has only been a couple of days). I am replacing my IPod with this unit, and I do expect to enjoy it while traveling, but right now I am mostly frustrated by trying to get my content on there. But I was surprised at how good the video looks once it loads, I am even able to enjoy subtitled material without needing the glasses I normally use to read. Bright and clear image, and it really shrinks the file size when it converts it, so a lot will fit. I give the device a 9, the interface a 4, and the support a 2.

In addition to the sound, It also has a good screen.
The limit is the necessity to import file only through the PC with Windows Media player 10. It takes a long time for the video files to convert from .avi to .wmv and not always it is able to do it.

PMC 120 Rocks. It is a good buy

Created: 06/04/07
This is my first media player I bought. Obviously I did a lot of research on it. Now that I have it and am using it.. it has lived upto my expectations. Syncs really well with windows media player. Menus is really simple and user friendly. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure it out. and guess what I just got it for $160.00 off ebay. Much better value for money. Most importantly it is better than the much hyped IPOD. Only thing I wish that it had a recorder like PMP 120 and could be much smaller in size. On the flip side what do you expect when you get a memory of 20GB?
