    Movie synopsis

Yuen Woo-Ping's exhilarating martial arts film stars Yu Rong Guang as Dr. Yang, a kind family doctor who charitably provides medicine and care to impoverished villagers, along with his assistant, Orchid (the lovely Jean Wang). Yang, however, also masquerades as the crime-fighting Iron Monkey, who robs gold from the rich and gives to it the poor, much to the dismay of the corrupt local governor (James Wong). When famed fighter and physician Wong Kei-Ying (Donnie Yen) and his young son, Wong Fei-Hung (crossdressed actress Tsang Sze-Man), wander into town, the cowardly ruler captures the boy and pits his father against the elusive Iron Monkey. Eventually, the heroes must unite to face an even greater foe--a renegade Shaolin master (Yen Yee Kwan) and his treacherous lackeys. This Chinese variation on the legend of Robin Hood is a good-natured (and often funny) action movie that features numerous outstanding fight scenes (including a battle fought on poles over a raging fire) and a surprising amount of cooking (yes, cooking). The film is the prequel to Tsui Hark's ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA series, which follows the adventures of folk hero Wong Fei-Hung as an adult. IRON MONKEY is particularly revelatory due to the amazing action sequences directed by Woo-Ping, who went on to choreograph the intricate fights of THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.

    Great movie

    Created: 01/03/07
I had heard about Iron Monkey from a friend and decided to purchase it on ebay. When the movie arrived, I couldn't help but to put it in the top ten of my favorite movies. If I could compare it to anything, it would be Robin Hood of China. The scenes are action packed and it touches on the youth of one of China's greatest warriors. This is a definate must buy for any martial arts fan.

    WOWZERS! Great movie!

    Created: 13/03/10
I love how this movie is able to avoid all the obvious fake fighting by actully having experienced fighters, also even the scenes where they would use wires plays really well into each scene and keeps you from being distracted. The fighting is excellent, the acting very in depth (probably because it was in another language and had subtitles), and the storyline was very typical of anime and chinese/japanese movies but yet still captivated me to where I would definetly watch it once a week or may be more ;) I would put this movie at my top shelf of movies as I personally believe it was one of the funnest kung fu movies ive ever seen with drama, comedy, and of course high loads of action! A+

I absolutely love Iron Monkey. It is a great movie. There is a ton of action and laughs, perfect for a night in. I really enjoy the big fight scene between the Iron Monkey and Master Wong Keying and the little boys fight scenes as well. You just have to watch it!

A good movie that should be added to any martial arts fan's collection. THis movie takes place in 1850 and depicts the time period accuratley. Also the movie has the very talented Donnie Yen who is a martial arts master. 4.5/5
