F. Gary Gray, Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron|Theatrical release: 2003 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

F. Gary Gray's thoroughly entertaining caper film--a remake of the 1969 crime classic starring Michael Caine and Noel Coward--doesn't merely imitate the original, and that is what makes it such a pleasant, wholly refreshing surprise. Mark Wahlberg stars as Charlie Croker, a smooth thief who orchestrates a flawless heist in Venice with the help of his mentor, safecracker John Bridger (Donald Sutherland). Together with his cronies--explosives expert Left-Ear (Mos Def), tech whiz-kid Lyle (Seth Green), adrenaline junky Handsome Rob (Jason Statham), and the shady Steve (Edward Norton)--Charlie walks away with $35 million worth of precious gold bars. But just when the gang appears to be headed to freedom, Steve performs a heist of his own, killing John and running off with the gold, thinking that Charlie and his mates are all deceased. A year later, Charlie has located Steve, who is gradually selling off the gold bars in Los Angeles. With the help of John's beautiful daughter Stella (Charlize Theron), a brilliant safecracker in her own right--as well as those adorable Mini Cooper sports cars--Charlie orchestrates a revenge heist that will teach Steve a valuable lesson about loyalty once and for all.

Flat out Fun and Fabulous Movie!

Created: 07/01/07
This movie is just flat out FUN movie to watch over and over again. It is an update to "The Italian Job" made in the 60's (???) with Michael Caine, but this version is so stylish, so hip, and so well done. The only cast members to reappear are the Mini Coopers ~ and boy, are they slick!

All of the stars did their own driving, and you can tell they are having a ball through the twists and turns of the chase scene and through the intelligent twists and turns of the plot. This is NOT your ordinary heist film!

And if Seth's rendition of conversation between Handsome Rob and Becky doesn't stay with you after the movie, you're not paying attention to his on-screen ad-libbing!

Utterly engrossing and enjoyable. Highly recommended.

PS: John Powell's music score from the movie is a must-have, also!

PPSS: Trivia fans will note the original "Italian Job" with Michael Caine playing on a background tv when Mark Wahlberg goes to visit Charlize Theron!!

Man OH Man! Find me a Mini Cooper to take a spin in :)

First of all I guess I have to mention that I didn't think I would like it because I absolutely dislike Wahlberg's acting 98% of the time, especially after "Truth About Charlie". But WOW!!! was I pleasantly surprised. A really enjoyable flick all the reviews before me go into such details about all of the actors and I have to agree LOVED the Cast selection.
Let's face it I have had a "thing" for Jason S. since {The Transporter} and he continues to catch my eye was perfect in his role as {Handsome Rob} Edward Norton definately is consistent with his acting skills, no surprise there. Seth Green was hilarious reminded me of {Rat Race} but none the less thought he was chosen wisely. Ahhh Mos Def as {Left Ear} I must say that I look forward to more roles for this versatile entertainer and Mark Wahlberg wasn't as bad as he was in {The Truth about Charlie} but he still is pretty stiff. Music soundtrack was GREAT!! The opening Boat chase scene in Venice was EXCELLENT. All those Car chase scenes with the mini coopers were cool and edgy. Storyline kept me engaged, interested and there were a few funny moments.

I would recommend that you purchase this one if you like movies with Car Chases or re-makes.

Fantastic cast - so-so movie

Created: 28/01/07
Watching the previews, I remember thinking "This is my kind of movie!". I was looking forward to a movie like this with such a great cast.

Sadly, the movie just seemed to move along too slow for my taste. Also, even with a great cast, some of the lines come off as "not quite right" - the chemistry just didn't seem to be there.

This is not really a bad movie - it does have its moments - but without the expected chemistry between the cast members, it does leave you wanting more.

Bottom Line: Rent this if need be... watch it once.. and move on. It's simply not worthy of purchasing for repeat viewing.

Great Movie, Excellent Action! Go Mini Coopers!!!

I did not know what to expect of this movie, but overall I thought it was awesome!

The actions, driving, suspense, and graphics were great. This movie was highly under-rated, I recommend watching it if not owning it!
