Her straight-for-the-jugular lyrical stance is given ample room to flex its muscles, and because of that very fact, JAGGED LITTLE PILL is indeed a tricky swallow. Pushed into the public eye by the scathing single "You Oughta Know," Morissette's American debut (she had two Canadian releases as a teen popster) lives up to its title.Recalling Siouxsie Sioux and Sinead O'Connor, Morissette's vocals coo and writhe, exuding a spectacular confidence of self, and letting her get away with lines like "I recommend biting off more than you can chew." The audio palette of flamenco guitar fills, distortion-drenched power chords and house-ready drum beats allow for Morissette to weave her songs in and out of genres, as easily as she goes through moods. Seemingly contradictory emotions come through in her feelings on falling in love on "Head Over Feet" ("You've already won me over in spite of me.../I couldn't help it/It's all your fault"). JAGGED LITTLE PILL is modern and aware music from a daring young songwriter.

Editorial Reviews
Ranked #32 in Village Voice's 1995 Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll.
Village Voice (19960220)

7 (out of 10) - ...sufficient a mixture of clean-cut looks and post-teen angst to be pop's very own Winona Ryder. Graphic enough in her lyrics, yet demographic enough in post-grunge sound to be the mainstream Liz Phair....Even more amazingly, she's quite good....if this is illusion, Alanis Morissette is mighty good at using it...
Melody Maker (19950909)

4 Stars - Excellent - ...Caught somewhere between Tori Amos and a souped up Liz Phair, just a few bars of the opening `All I Really Want' should be enough to convince that she really is a bit special...

This Woman Knows How To Rock

Created: 28/09/06
Alanis is one of my favorite artists, but all biases aside, I think just about anyone can get into this album. It is fueled by all sorts of emotions, from childhood angst, feel-good grooving, anger over relationships, and even jealousy. Alanis seems to always put her heart and soul into her lyrics and the music is powerful enough to complement her voice perfectly.

Jagged Little Pill is a very good album to listen to in the car, on road trips, cleaning house, or even just relaxing! Some tracks are up-beat, such as "All I Really Want," which opens the album, and some are more somber and serious, such as "Perfect," which is a song reflecting on unfulfilled parent/child relationships. You will remember some of the chart-topping tracks, such as "Hand in My Pocket," "You Oughta Know," "You Learn," and even "Ironic" from their heavy radio play, especially from the mid-to-late 90's.

This album also features some interesting aspects, such as an alternate take of "You Oughta Know" (track 13), and if you let the CD play through entirely, you will find a secret track called "Forgive Me Love" written into the album a while after the last song has ended.

Definitely worth a try, I would recommend it to anyone who can enjoy a strong woman singing about her life and values in a very powerful way. Every track can be enjoyed!

One of the best CD's ever made

Created: 04/04/06
The cd is very unique in its music, and set Alanis Morissette on fire, and launched her into the world. Its music is very sultry, and strong, and the songs like "you oughta know" and "right through you" are a tribute to women, encouraging them to stand up and realize their independance, where others encouraged people to accept and actually enjoy their moods or feelings, rather than be afraid of them. It was a very powerful CD, and in my mind, any CD that promotes inner strength to teenagers is a definite A+

She plays many different instruments on the CD including a wonderful take on a harmonica that seems to highlight her vocals immensily. The melodies are pure A Grade in your face 'guts' with a lot of soul and character, and definately well worth listening to.

The following is a list of the songs on her album.
I hope you enjoyed this review.

Memorable

This is one of those CD's that is a must-have for any music library, and is included in scores of "Best Album" lists by an impressive array of mixed reviewers. I purchased this when it debuted and literally wore out at least two CD's from overplay. It's a unique and incredibly diverse album with vocals that will sear your brain, and lyrics that explore anger, love, bitterness, angst, and jealousy in depth and with a confident, smart style that is almost unheard of in a breakthrough artist. The album contains a list of songs that are superior in every aspect and stand out uniquely and unforgettably on their own, with absolutely no "filler", and include crooning ballads, sultry soul, raging rock, and more. It's sarcastic, crude, rude, and harsh; yet it was honest and actually made sense. This album will not leave you unaffected, even for those who are not fans of this incredible musical gem. The music, lyrics, and voice of Alannis Morrissette are strong, with an incredible range of emotion and depth that reach both men and women. Although criticized for "faking" the angst and anger that are part of her new persona (Alannis was a bubble-gum pop singer in Canada before crashing into the US charts with JLP), she deserves every hymn of praise sung for this unique and talented compilation. Many people will probably remember many of the songs as they received heavy radio airplay in the 90's. It's hard to believe that it's been ten years since the release of this rock/alternative masterpiece. It's as contemporary now as it was then as a voice for young women True, it's been a while now since I reached into my CD library and listened to Jagged Little Pill, but I will always remember what it did for me back when it came out. It still carries a powerful wave of nostalgia for me when I overhear any of the songs on this memorable classic. Isnt' that what all great music should do?

One of the best artists with her best CD

Created: 29/07/08
Alanis Morissette is simply an amazing artist. She is a fantastic singer and a simply phenomenal song writer. Jagged Little Pill is one of the few albums I listen to everyday. The writing is just amazing. I love how unapologetic it is. She is so honest and just puts it out there to get it out of her system. This is my favorite CD from her and probably always will be. All of her other CDs are fantastic as well but nothing will ever beat this album. This is an album you cannot live without. If you haven't been an Alanis fan it is never to late to start. Get the CD that put her on the map here in the US. Alanis has the talent to keep her going for many years to come and I will be here, eager to listen.

One of the Worst Successful Albums of the 90's

Created: 05/05/06
This album is atrocious. Possibly one of the most irritating singing voices ever, sophomoric lyrics (for example, almost none of the "ironic" things in the unlistenable song of the same title are actually examples of irony), repetitive, simplistic song structures. Just bad. Bad bad bad. I was in high school when this album came out and a friend's little sister (she was maybe 13 or 14 and just discovering Teen Angst) used to listen to this all the time. She doesn't anymore, as she's now an adult. Which makes me wonder HOW this album has managed to stay in print, or get re-released, or whatever happened. Eeew. Listening to Alanis Morissette is like accidentally touching somebody else's snot-soaked used tissue.
