Movie synopsis

For his third feature film, British director Sam Mendes (AMERICAN BEAUTY) turns to the pages of Anthony Swofford's 2003 book on his experiences in the first Gulf War, and enlists William Broyles Jr.--a former Lieutenant who fought in Vietnam--to convert it into a screenplay. Mendes's film strays into FULL METAL JACKET territory as it opens, with young recruit Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) undertaking some rigorous basic training under the steely, watchful eye of Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx). Impressed, Sykes invites Swofford to join his team, and partners him with Troy (Peter Sarsgaard), ultimately taking them to Saudi Arabia to fight in the first Gulf War. But once they arrive in the punishing heat of the desert, the long wait for battle sends many of the Marines dangerously close to the brink of insanity.Drawing on the experience of acclaimed cinematographer Roger Deakins (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) to help viewers get a close-up taste of the Marines' punishing life in the desert, Mendes's film enters into deeply unsettling territory, the likes of which many cinemagoers won't have experienced since Martin Sheen lost his tenuous grip on reality in APOCALYPSE NOW. Indeed, Mendes deploys a few similar tactics to those that made Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film so effective: a hip soundtrack that uses songs from artists as varied as Public Enemy and the Rolling Stones, and a feeling of disillusionment and futility among the troops that really digs in when the battle finally blackens the desert skies. Avoiding any overt antiwar sentiments, Mendes instead provides a thoughtful account of life as a modern day soldier, demonstrating how technology has made the average Marine's job all but redundant, and created disaffected troops who are as much a threat to each other as the enemies they wait to face in the trenches.

Editorial reviews

3 stars out of 5 -- "[B]lunt and intimate....The jolt of JARHEAD is undeniable, and it comes when you least expect it."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (11/17/2005)

"[A]n eye-opening experience....[Mendes] forges, perhaps, a new kind of drama: a portrait of war stripped of all glamour and design....JARHEAD is an existential docudrama: cool and funny, vivid and remote at the same time." -- Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (11/11/2005)

"The result is rewarding....It's good to see Mendes expanding as a filmmaker."
USA Today - Mike Clark (11/23/2005)

"[Q]uizzical, visually striking....JARHEAD provides some kind of reportage of a war whose consequences we haven't yet begun to understand..."
Sight and Sound - Leslie Felperin (01/01/2006)

"[A]n exceptionally smart war movie, the more so for the relative absence of any war."
Uncut - Uncut Staff (02/01/2006)

3 stars out of 5 -- "It's an image of war that lingers, a vision of Hell which Dante would recognise..."

Not your typical war movie...

Created: 21/05/06
Between the very catchy song, Kanye West's Jesus Walks and the "Hoorahs",you may have thought Jarhead would be a hard-driving blood and guts war movie. It's anything but. While there is some graphic violence, this is much more of a character piece. Director, Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) bring his moody sensibilty to a htoughtful and compelling movie.

Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain, Donnie Darko) is excellent as a young man finding out what it really means to be a modern day marine. The screenplay is based on Anthony Swafford's best-selling book about his experiences in Iraq and Kuwait.

This is a very good film, but it's slow development and thoughtful pacing may not be for everyone.

Jarhead

Created: 16/02/09
The true story of Marine Anthony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal) who enlists in the Marines - like his father did before him - and goes through the toughening up process of boot camp before being sent to the Gulf as part of over half a million soldiers in the Desert Shield campaign to beat back the Iraqi army which has invaded Kuwait. He encounters fellow Marines, or Jarheads, who are as perplexed, afraid and conflicted as he is. He comes under the command of Sergeant Sykes (Jamie Foxx) and forms a bond with his mentor, Troy (Peter Sarsgaard); but the experience is never close to what he expected, in any way whatsoever.

Jarhead, or Jughead? Select a Mason Jar!

Created: 23/01/08
This dark and brooding psychological case study does not a war movie make. If I were to make a quick comparison of director Sam Mendes' work it would have to be with "The Deer Hunter." This writer who served three combat tours in Vietnam has the experience and credentials to say that "Jarhead" lacks the realism of Oliver Stone's "Platoon" and does a disservice to former Marine Anthony Swofford's novel from which the film was taken. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the main protagonist and is unable to display a persuading enough performance to save the film. When it comes to investing the purchase price in "Jarhead" I'd recommend you put your money in a Mason Jar and save it for a more realistic war film — like "Platoon," or even "Henry V" — you'll get more return for your money.

Jarhead - An unconventional anti-war film - WS

Created: 11/04/08
The producers had a great idea with this film, but in the end they didn't quite succeed. In my view, the goal of this film was to create a war film that lies somewhere in between the antiwar movies like `Born on the 4th of July' and the gung-ho type stories such as `Saving Private Ryan' or even the 40's war movies. The image of military service and the reality are two very different things. Some find that they take to the military life quite easily, but for others, it is tedious and unfulfilling. It is this last aspect of military service that is presented in this film. We follow the main character through basic training, through scout sniper school and into the desert as part of Operation Desert Shield, after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Several numbing months later, they are ready to go to war, march into Saudia Arabia & Kuwait, and the war is over before it started without anyone having fired a single shot in anger. Everyone is left with the feeling that their perseverance was, in the end, a complete waste of time and energy.

My rating is 2 1/2 of 10 Stars

Marines left in the desert waiting for war to begin....

Created: 23/03/06
This film is about a Marine Sniper, his men and the time they spend waiting for the war to begin, the overwhelming boredom, and the anticipation of dying. This is not your typical war movie. It takes place prior to and during Desert Storm/Gulf War Era. The Marine and his men are sent overseas, and for months are left in the desert with pretty much nothing to do, they get bored, some on the the brink of insanity. When they do see "action" it is thwarted by technology that works too well and some that does not work at all.
If I have some time I will see it again and I can not say that about most films I have seen.
