Jericho - An alternatve take on post-apocalyptic life.
Created: 09/01/09
Jericho was a TV series that presented a different take on a post-apocalyptic world. What would life be like if only a few nukes were dropped, and there were more than a handful of survivors, scattered throughout the United States? What conflicts would arise, how would people react, both as survivors and moving forward? What would you do if given a second chance?
The interesting thing about Jericho was that while it stripped out many things taken for granted - power, communication, and some larger cities; it left most of small-town Jericho intact. How would the survivors cope with their "new" existence, dealing with scavengers, mercenaries, an army following orders of a new, rogue government?
The characters and their development between "old school" and a "new beginning" presented many opportunities to explore how neither one as an absolute could work in the new future, but would require a sort of coalescing or blending of philosophies, attitudes and views. The individual characters represented what is both good and bad in all of us, how they came to terms with their new existence, trying to “normalize” and put reason to what had happened, and why they were spared.
Traditionally, shows and films about a post-apocalyptic world, present scenarios about nuclear winter, the end of the humanity and all things living, or a return to the Stone Age. Rarely does such a scenario present itself with the opportunity to move forward with potential hope for survival. Jericho was such a show.
Unfortunately, the series was not to be completed. Even with pressure from the very loyal fan base of the show, it would only be resurrected once. Originally cancelled after season one because of low ratings, the network brought the show back to the elation of the fans. Ratings started to climb and the series captured more fans. The writers' strike cut season two short and ratings plummeted. The network decided not to bring it back after the strike was over.
Buying the series on DVD is the only way to enjoy the potential of this new take on a second chance.

After viewing a number of episodes on the SciFi channel, I decided to look for a complete DVD collection on eBay. After receiving the complete series, I watched all the episodes in the span of a few days. Where to start with a review...this series is compelling to say the least. You get drawn right into the story. I kept asking myself "would I act like that if thrust into a similar situation?" throughout many of the episodes. Great acting, great writing, great everything!
If this kind of TV series sounds at all interesting, it wouldn't hurt to purchase a DVD set. I think I paid around $55 including shipping for both seasons. Definately worth it! I really got a lot of viewing pleasure for my money.

An awesome 'What If' series. What if your country came under nuclear attack? Could you survive, and if so, how would life and society be as a result? 'Jericho' poses just such a question with this thoughtful and chillingly realistic series of survival and perseverance. The United States comes under nuclear attack, and Jericho, Kansas ends up witnessing the horrifying results. Losing all communication with the outside world, Jericho desperately tries to find help while keeping civil order. Nobody knows who to trust or where to turn.
This series has one of the most solid plot lines I've seen in many years, and a terrific cast of characters to back it up including veteran star, Gerald McRaney and Skeet Ulrich who give solid performances in their lead roles.
The series only lasted less than two seasons, but they were a very memorable two seasons, and they can be enjoyed with this reasonably priced box set including the full series, a bonus disc, and a previously unreleased episode. For people who enjoy good drama series, need to pick up this box set now. You won't be disappointed.

Jericho is stunning. We live in dangerous times and the story sucks you in as very plausible. Once you get beyond the post appocoliptic stuff the characters suck you in. Oustanding performances and very beleivable actors. I live in a small town (what we do?) but work in the Washington Pentagon world and this material holds up under my scrutiny.

I first saw Jericho during a Sci-fi channel marathon and instantly fell in love with it. The characters, plot, and overall idea of the show won me over and kept me hooked. I was shocked to find out that it was cancelled, was brought back to life by the fans, and then killed again. I haven't seen every episode yet but I have seen the first seven and I know I will love the rest.
