    Movie synopsis

Following the dissolution of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the legendary guitarist formed the Band of Gypsys with bassist Billy Cox, whom Hendrix met in the army, and drummer Buddy Miles. They ushered the 1960s into the 1970s in two evenings of concerts at the Fillmore East on December 31, 1969 and January 1, 1970. This production presents color and black-and-white footage of those nights. The freewheeling bluesy sound of the Band of Gypsys is captured on such tracks as "Machine Gun" and "Message of Love." Also included are interviews with Hendrix's bandmates, footage of Jimi on the Dick Cavett Show, and interviews with rock dignitaries such as Lenny Kravitz, Slash, and Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, who expound on Hendrix's contributions to popular music. Sadly, this performance, originally designed to fulfill a forgotten contractual agreement, was one of the guitar master's last; Hendrix died less than one year later. The DVD includes never-before-seen material, including unreleased music, photographs, and additional concert footage.

Great performances marred by poor editing, voiceovers.

The concert footage is terrific, but they don't let Jimi play more than two minutes without a voiceover. By the time I was halfway through the movie, I was ready to strangle things in frustration. Even Machine Gun, the only song they allow to be played through, is split between performance and news footage of Vietnam, like we won't know what the song's about without being told. If anyone ever just runs the concert from start to finish, I'll buy it in a second - lots of it is incandescent, even in black and white - but I'd have skipped this one if I'd known what "live from Filmore East" really meant - broken up snippets of that, Filmore West and even Isle of Wight with voiceovers throughout.
Isle of Wight, titled Blue Wild Angel, is a much more satisfying vid, and features many of the same people interviewed in Filmore, but they're all up front and the concert runs straight through, without voiceovers.

Hey Joe, Where you Goin' With That DVD in Your Hand?

You say you're goin' down to the trash can, you don't wanna be messin' round with this one? Heyey Joe, why'd they have to release it? Oh yeah, to fulfill a contractual obligation--I get it now.

Ok, so maybe I ain't no James Taylor, but you can at least get my drift. Jimi, you deserved a better tribute to your genius than this. Still, for die-hard Jimifans, this concert's b&w audio challenged versions of "You Don't Know" and "Machine Gun" and a very fine guitar solo in "Foxey Lady" are worth catching. Personally, and probably like most of his fans, I prefer some of his other (aka his earlier) stuff.

It's the Godfather of Rock n Roll Guitar!

In the menu, you can watch either full concert footage, without the interview, or you can watch the full movie, with quality interviews about the life of Jimi Hendrix. The concert footage is nothing short of amazing, and it's one of the last performances Jimi ever puts on in his career. A great DVD to own.

From the greatest electric guitarist in the world and the best power trio in the world, the greatest concert performace and the only one they ever did professionally recorded on audio video.

It doesn't get any better than this. From the greatest electric guitarist of them all by far a must have album of all original songs with informative documentary.
