The Middle Ages --- truly horrific!
Created: 01/07/09
Anyone who knows the story of Joan of Arc knows how this film will end, so don't expect a feel-good movie. Neil Patrick Harris is truly sleazy as King Charles; if God was testing Charles' faith, surely Charles failed the test. LeeLee Sobieski is the perfect Joan, brave and pious. You cheer for her even though you know she can't win. Not only were the Middle Ages brutal --- starving children, a blind man burned to death, people shot by multiple arrows at close range --- but the political and religious intrigue was even worse. Though Joan's faith never wavered, she was cruelly manipulated by the very people she tried to help. Well-made, well worth seeing, evokes the adventure and the heartbreak of a long-ago era.

A gritty, magnificent retellling of this heroic tale

Leelee Sobieski's performance in the title role is extraordinary, both visually and emotionally thanks in no small part to the superb cinematography and faultless sound editing which brings to life that era's horrific battle scenes replete with mud, moans and deadly, whizzing arrows.
This movie showcases Leelee Sobieski's stunningly beautiful face and considerable acting prowess. The final scene is hard to watch, Joan's courage and faith is evident even when pushed to pain beyond human endurance....her heart-wrenching screams of agony stay with you for a long time.
Expert direction, a talented supporting cast and gorgeous Leelee Sobieski's powerful portrayal of the ill-fated Joan d'Arc are the ingredients which make this film a truly moving cinematic experience.

Marvelous film for its time - spiritual and emotional.

I saw this movie many years ago and never found it in stores to purchase a copy for myself. I'm grateful to have finally acquired it for my library.
The portrayal of the madness of the the church heresy trials and the portrayal of war in the name of religion are magnificent. Add to that the hauntingly beautiful voice of a very young Charlotte Church and a star-studded cast and you have one of the most meaningful and spiritual movies I've ever seen.

Excellent Docudrama for all ages!

This film is very interesting and captivating! My family has watched it hundreds of times (literally) since it was fist released a decade ago! Although the TV series was much longer, it contained many more clips that made the film seem complete; nothing was missing or left you guessing. The "Cut" version that is on the produced DVD contains only a small portion of the actual 4 hour film. Other than that, it is a great film to add to any collection.
