Journey to the Center of the Earth (DVD, 2008)

Eric Brevig, Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson|Theatrical release: 2008 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

This 2008 movie update of Jules Verne's classic sci-fi/fantasy novel uses the 1864 tale as a template, with its hero, scientist Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser), referring to his missing brother's notes on the novel. His nephew Sean (Josh Hutcherson) in tow, Anderson travels to Iceland to investigate his sibling's theories, enlisting a fellow scientist's daughter, Hannah (Anita Briem), as a guide. Soon the trio's Icelandic mountain trek descends into a cave and, then deeper still to, naturally, the center of the earth, where dinosaurs and other strange prehistoric creatures still dwell. After many dangerous encounters with the native flora and fauna, Trevor, Sean, and Hannah must find a way back to the surface or face being stranded miles below the earth's crust.Directed by Eric Brevig, a veteran Hollywood visual effects supervisor (MEN IN BLACK, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW), JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH clearly delights in unveiling eye-catching CGI creatures and landscapes. Presented in some theaters in 3D format, the film features lunging beasts and vertigo-inducing visions, which are effective even in 2D, while Fraser, working in the same amiable vein as the MUMMY movies, provides a human focus amidst the special effects. For fans of the ever-likable Fraser and/or the JOURNEY story, there is plenty to enjoy in this effects-heavy adventure film.

Good movie. nice to get glasses with the dvd. action packed and funny.Professor Trevor Anderson receives his teenager nephew Sean Anderson. He will spend ten days with his uncle while his mother, Elizabeth, prepares to move to Canada. She gives a box to Trevor that belonged to his missing brother, Max, and Trevor finds a book with references to the last journey of his brother. He decides to follow the steps of Max with Sean and they travel to Iceland, where they meet the guide Hannah Ásgeirsson. While climbing a mountain, there is a thunderstorm and they protect themselves in a cave. However, a lightening collapses the entrance and the trio is trapped in the cave. They seek an exit and falls in a hole, discovering a lost world in the center of the Earth. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Good Clean Fun

When I saw this, I thought "just another remake". Not so. It assumes Verne's novel was fact and a modern day scientist follows the origional journty. Nifty special effects. Josh Hutcherson is great as the 13 year old nephew who goes along. He is jittery at first, but grows in confidence. I especially like what the movie does not have. No gratuitious violence, no psyhcopaths, noone gets killed, no political messages. Just good clean fun.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Created: 23/02/09
This is a comedic rendition of Jules Verne's famous book. The forgetful, sloppy Professor, the street-wise teenager and the pretty, smart, talented female, pure Hollywood. This is a poke at the Indiana Jones series movies. Lot's of screaming, Disney-style roller coaster rides, unexplainable animals in an underground Jurassic Park. The 'blue bird' was a bit too much to swallow (pun intended).
Having said that, once you realized this was a typical Brendan Fraser (George of the Jungle) movie with a lots of silly stuff, it became fun to watch. Predictable, silly, lots of special effects made it fairly easy to finish.
The PG rating makes it suitable for the younger viewer.
