JVC DR-MV150B

I've always had good luck with JVC, and aside from some muddled directions, I think the streak will continue.
First, in order to actually see the recorder's menu, your TV must be able to receive 'input' on another frequency. That's to say, if you have an older TV this may not work. (I wondered what the 'input' button on the remote was for..)
I'm using DVD+RW and DVD+R DL disks, since those are more likely to be compatible with a variety of DVD players. Pay attention, though, to the recommendations in the owner's manual. I inadvertantly picked up 2.4x; I had to go back and get 6x.
You'll also need an S-Video cable and, warning, the hook-up instructions are wrong. Connect the S-video cable to the recorder and the TV, and the audio and video cables get placed into the connections right next to the S-video space. (I followed the hook-up in the manual, and had to re-connect all the wires.)
JVC's customer service was easy to reach, and I even got a real person.
The recorder makes you follow step-by-step. You can't record until the disk is initialized, and the screen states so. You can't finalize until a title has been editted in.
I had a 'stupid question division' question, but the e-mail didn't come in time, so... if you don't want to sit through every family movie, start the dubbing and press the input button on the remote to get yourself back to live TV. Press input occassionally to check the progress of the transfer.

STOP!!!! Don't buy this clap trap. It is a terribly priced machine at over $200 but somewhat decent as $100. If you are looking for a machine that will put the title in the title list after you record something, forget it. So, each time you record, you will have to manually put it in. On a -rw, you can record up to 99 recordings, so get those fingers ready to type all those titles in. Yeah, fun. There is no auto clock. While you are looking at a recorded movie or anything you've recorded, don't bother to hit the "display" button for the time, it will be futile. Also, the disc when you take it out of the machine will be hot because they didn't bother to put in a fan to keep it cool. Yeah. And, finally, they didn't put all instructions in the instruction manual to perform some of the features of this machine. Again, joy. If you should buy this around $100 bucks like I did, it's somewhat decent, not good, but decent at that price. I hope this helps the next sucker, oh excuse me, potential owner to decide better.

Love this JVC DR-MV150B DVD Recorder/VCR combo

Created: 06/02/10
I asked for and received this as a Christmas gift so that I could transfer all my precious family VCR tapes to DVD. I am not a techie by any means and so I had my daughter's boyfriend install the player as I read the directions. It only took a few minutes. I had read in another review that it was hard to follow the directions for dubbing from VCR to tape, but I just read the directions and did it fairly easily. It allows you to put in titles and mark chapters. This took a little practice and time, but it was fun. I have always loved the products from JVC and this one is no exception. The sound and picture quality are excellent. It is easy to navigate through the menu options, set up was no problem, and I would highly recommend it for those who still have VCR tapes they want to play or copy. If you just want to record from TV straight to DVD or play DVD tapes, it works for that also.
