K-19: The Widowmaker (DVD, 2002)

Kathryn Bigelow, Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson|Theatrical release: 2002 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Inspired by a true story that was kept secret until the fall of communism, K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER is a tale of ordinary men who sacrifice everything for their shipmates and their country. In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, an ill-prepared Russian nuclear missile submarine embarks on its maiden voyage with near-disastrous consequences. When the sub's nuclear reactor malfunctions, Captain Alexei Vostrikov (Harrison Ford) makes some decisions that are unpopular with the crew. Tensions mount as radiation levels rise throughout the submarine and there is no respite in sight. If the sub explodes, it may cause an international incident as it may be mistaken as an attack on a nearby NATO base and an American Navy destroyer that is in the area. If the sub dives deep below the surface, perhaps the malfunction can be fixed, but the loss of some lives is then inevitable. The Executive Officer, Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson), who formerly commanded the sub, can placate the crew, but must decide where his own loyalties lie. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (BLUE STEEL, POINT BREAK), this thriller examines the Cold War from the Russian perspective, an uncommon point of view in American films.

A VERY REAL THRILLER

Created: 26/02/07
Harrison Ford is excellent in this movie as he portrays the captain of the ill fated Russian nuclear submarine, K-19. It seems in the early days of using nuclear fusion to generate power, the Russians were quite careless. They used shortcuts and unrealistic deadlines to their detriment. Since this is a true story it has more impact. It is a chilling portrayal of a Russian nuclear submarine during its early trial run. The nuclear reactor on the submarine malfunctions. What to do? How to make a judgment when the technology is so new? Several attempts to repair the nuclear reactor resulted in some sailors being exposed to much harmful radiation. The movie does not tell much of the end results, but the book does. The sailors who survived spent their remaining years in various stages of radiation illness. A great movie !! Excellent acting by Harrison Ford as the stern, immovable captain of a doomed submarine.

Feeling as a member of the crew, K-19 The Widowmaker was called "A Masterpiece" by Larry King. For me, Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson gave a strong performance. The directions was excellent and the special effects and costums were spot on. Great Movie.

Nice Undersea Adventure

K-19 is an interesting submarine story of a disastrous Soviet sub mission. The movie shows the sacrifice and courage of those involved, all painstakingly recreated aboard a mockup Soviet sub. This is one to pick up for sure if you're interested in sub movies or a Harrison Ford fan, or if you enjoy thrillers that are a little different that most.

Seaman Sleeper

Although my wife loves Harrison, she could barely muster enough energy to stay awake during this movie. Me, not to let a movie go to waste, watched until the end. My opinion, this movie needed a better plot, better actors who could hold their accents (Harrison needed a better coach) and the ending make-up of them all old, looked like someone grabbed the rubber masks & false facial hair & stuck it on their faces. I know this isn't saying much about the movie but that is what most stood out are these few annoying nuances.

The sub was spectacular and although I believe this one was filmed partially in Northern Manitoba - still needed something more. Below Average rating :(
