K-Pax (DVD, 2002, Collector's Edition)

Iain Softley, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges|Theatrical release: 2001 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

A mysterious man (Kevin Spacey) shows up in Grand Central Station claiming to be an alien, and is promptly taken to a mental institution. When he doesn't respond to medication, he begins seeing a psychiatrist (Jeff Bridges) who is fascinated by him. The man calls himself Prot (rhymes with "boat"), and tells the doctor about life on his home planet, K-PAX. When he learns of Prot's ability to see ultraviolet light, and his savant-like knowledge of astronomy, the psychiatrist, despite his skepticism, begins to believe. But his continuing obsession with the man begins to bring out deeper issues, and Bridges' character is compelled to question whether his patient is a visitor from another world, or simply a deeply disturbed man. Based on the novel of the same title by Gene Brewer, the film is directed by Iain Softley. More than a science-fiction tale, K-PAX is a reflection on the way we live our lives, the things we think we know, and the connection of one human being to another. Spacey gives his usual believable, complex performance, and Bridges is exceptional in the role of a man torn by what he knows and what he wants to believe.

Spacey's unforgettable space cadet...

Created: 14/08/07
Kevin Spacey's intensity as an alien/mental patient (?) makes K-PAX rock! Ably supported by Jeff Bridges who plays his psychiatrist. Together they make what could be a tedious movie come alive. Spacey's deadpan delivery presents some classic dialogue between his character Prot and Dr. Mark Powell played by Jeff Bridges.

Prot informs Powell, “I'm an alien. Don't worry, I'm not going to leap out of your chest.” Later Prot tries to explain his appearance to Powell, by opining, “Why is a soap bubble round? Because it is the most energy efficient configuration. Similarly, on your planet I look like you; on K-PAX I look like a K-PAXian.“

During one of their sessions Prot is offered fruit and, to the amazement of the audience, he munches a banana without peeling it, and upon completing his treat he tells Powell, “Your produce alone has been worth the trip.”

Prot connects with the other patients in his ward and enables them to heal more efficiently than the professionals who have been "warehousing" them. Prot also is able to both connect emotionally with Dr. Mark Powell and cause Powell to wonder if Prot is in fact from K-PAX. Then Prot enables Powell to bridge the emotional chasm he has with his son by an earlier message.

It is a Powell’s painful duty to pursue his investigation to determine, or disprove Prot’s identity. Powell’s investigation results in a confrontation between the two, and leads Prot to comment, “I will admit the possibility that I am Robert Porter, if you will admit the possibility that I am from K-PAX. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a beam of light to catch.”

The ensuing ending is poignantly disappointing, but overall it is a fun film to watch.

KPAX DVD WideScreen

I saw this in the theatre, and always thought it was one of Spacey's best performances. This thoughtful drama keeps you guessing until the very end (and beyond, where did Bess go anyway?) as to whether Prout (Spacey) really is or isn't from planet K-PAX. Jeff bridges also has an excellent supporting role as the psychologist assigned to Prout's case. The wide screen format does a great job showing the turmoil of Grand Central in the opening screens, and the bleakness of the Manhatten "EL" as Bridges takes it in and out of the city. 3 stars for sure.

Definitely a film that did not get the attention that it deserved.
Prot(played by Kevin Spacey)claims to be from another planet. He has uncanny psychic abilities. Jeff Bridges plays the Psychiatrist trying to get into Prot's brain to find out what is going on.
The supporting roles of the other mental patients in the hospital with Prot are awesome!
A definite must see.

Universal Enlightenment from K-Pax

Created: 09/11/08
I love Sci-Fi. This is a good example of how human kind would react to a real alien if one were to visit us. A very gentle, heartwarming tale about Prot, a visitor from the planet K-Pax. Traveling on light, he has visited before to aide a friend he made years ago here on earth. He brings enlightenment, and knowledge to all he touches. Great Movie! One of my favorites.

Keeps you guessing with comedy, drama and mystery!

On a Saturday night, I tuned into K-PAX on a TV network broadcast. I just happened to sit down for the evening to rest and I turned this one on - it was destiny. This is an astonishing film with even more astonishing performances from Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges. I'm not a spoiler - the great joy of watching a film is the one I had that night. This story unfolded that I knew nothing about and it was mesmerizing and uplifting. Only a few other films have that hypnotic effect, one, a quite different type of story, Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. Anyway, all I'm going to say is to see this film if you haven't while you can still find it. It did not receive the praise and attention it deserved from Hollywood as they were too busy making films where everyone is rushing around extremely stressed with guns in their hands and throwing Bibles in the trash. Well, this film is one of the few good ones that made it through. I could say it will make you smile, maybe even laugh or shed a tear but it will keep you guessing, wondering and thinking long after the film ends.
