Movie synopsis

When a 12-year-old from Detroit moves to China with his mother and incurs the wrath of the class bully at his new school, he makes an unlikely ally in the form of his aging maintenance man, a kung fu master who teaches him the secrets to self-defense. Upon arriving at his new school, Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) develops a powerful crush on pretty classmate Mei Ying. The feeling is mutual, although the cultural divide between Dre and Mei Ying makes a friendship unlikely, and romance impossible. When cruel classmate and kung fu prodigy Cheng learns of Dre's feelings for Mei Ying, he harasses and humiliates the young outsider in front of the entire school. With no one to turn to for help, Dre confides his fears in kindly maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), a kung fu master who knows that serenity and maturity -- not punches and power -- are the true keys to mastering the martial arts. As Dre prepares to face down his intimidating tormentor, he begins to realize that the real fight is just beginning.

A good remake of the 1984 Classic

Created: 05/10/10
Jackie Chan stars in this remake of the 1984 hit movie.
Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) and his mother, Sherry (Taraji P. Henson) move to China for her work and Dre has trouble adjusting to the new lifestyle and getting along with the local boys. He meets Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) who is the maintenance man at the apartments where he lives and after a couple of fights Mr. Han agrees to help Dre learn to defend himself and compete in the local Karate tournament.

The movie follows pretty much along the lines of the original film where the young boy meets a girl and the girls relatives are all against their being together. There are some differences but they are minor to the plot.

Jackie Chan gives a good performance in this film but there is (in my opinion) not enough of him fighting in this one. However since the movie is all about the boy, that is understandable.

Jaden Smith, who also starred in The Pursuit of Happyness and The Day the Earth Stood Still gives another good performance and is showing that he can become a great actor.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a great coming of age movie or likes a good Karate action movie.

Karate Kid in China

Created: 25/10/10
Entertaining film with wonderful scenic views of China.
A Detroit kid (Jaden Smith) moves to China with his mother for her job. He becomes a target of a group of poorly taught Kung Fu students who also happen to go to his school. He enters a tournament and learns Kung Fu from a master (Jackie Chan) in order to survive.
The basic story is exactly the same as the Ralph Macchio/Pat Morita Karate Kid and even has some of the exact lines from the original. The setting is in China (not Southern Cal) and the kid learns Kung Fu (not Karate)... the storyline is the same down to the attack on the "Kung Fu" kid's leg in the semi-finals, the mysterious asian healing procedure of the master and final conflict.
Jaden Smith does a decent job and Jackie Chan is excellent as the Kung Fu master.
I would actually rate this film as a 3.5* out of 5.

An Absolute Must See!

This movie is a great one! As a mother, it is heartbreaking in the begging but builds up to this amazing end! It brings you through a plethora of emotions in a perfect order and leaves you wowed.
I've seen and loved all the original Karate Kid's too and in the beginning I didn't think anyone could replace Mr. Miagi but when I started watching it, I was glued to the screen for the entire film!
It is just phenominal and I recommend seeing it!

Great movie!

Created: 25/11/10
I saw it in the theater and I had to have it I have the originals, alot of people thought it wouldn't be great because Jackie Chan is in it but he did an awesome job and so did Jaden Smith. It's too bad that they have a "Justin Beiber" music video in the extras that sucks but hey you can't change that.

The Karate Kid

Created: 17/11/10
A great remake of original Karate Kid movie. Will Smith has put out excellent movies for years and this movie from his son and a recent music video from younger daughter show they are talented for generation. Different twist to original squeals, but family and I enjoy the filming of Great Wall of China and over all scenic filming of movie.
