Kick-Ass (Blu-ray/DVD, 2010, 3-Disc Set, Includes Digital Copy)

Matthew Vaughn, Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage|Theatrical release: 2010 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Adapted from Mark Millar's hyper-violent comic book of the same name, director Matthew Vaughn's (LAYER CAKE) vigilante superhero film tells the tale of an average New York teenager who decides to don a costume and fight crime. Comic book geek Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) may not have good coordination or special powers, but that doesn't mean he isn't a fully capable crime fighter. After purchasing a flashy wet suit on the Internet, Dave starts busting up baddies with nothing but brute force. He calls himself Kick-Ass, and he can take a beating as good as he can dish one out. Before long, Kick-Ass has become a local sensation, and others are following his lead. Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz) are a father-daughter crime-fighting duo who have set their sights on local mob heavy Frank D'Amico (Mark Strong). They're doing a decent job of dismantling Frank's sizable underworld empire when Kick-Ass gets drawn into the fray. But Frank's men play rough, and his son, Chris (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), is about to become Kick-Ass' very first arch nemesis. When Chris assumes the persona of Red Mist, the stage is set for a superhero showdown that could spell the end of Kick-Ass once and for all.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

4 stars out of 5 -- "[An] action-filled and very funny flick....Vaughn delivers one rollicking and raucous set piece after another but never loses sight of the fun."
Box Office - Pete Hammond (03/13/2010)

5 stars out of 5 -- "A ridiculously entertaining, perfectly paced, ultra-violent cinematic rush that kicks the places other movies struggle to reach."

Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (05/01/2010)

3 stars out of 4 -- "[T]he mocking tone and off-kilter vibe set this film apart. It even has a hearty dose of charm, thanks mostly to the most outrageous performance by a child in recent memory."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (04/16/2010)

"Ms. Moretz is by far the best thing about the film: she holds the screen as gracefully as she executes a running back flip."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (04/16/2010)

"The film, based on the comic by Mark Millar and John S. Romita Jr., is grungily stylish and often funny..."
Wall Street Journal (04/16/2010)

"This shrewd mixture of slick comic-book mayhem, unmistakable sweetness and ear-splitting profanity is poised to be a popular culture phenomenon....
Los Angeles Times - Kenneth Turan (04/16/2010)

"Directed by Matthew Vaughn with verve and a crisp, color-saturated visual sense, KICK-ASS should delight fans of the original comics and garden-variety action junkies as well."

3 stars out of 4 -- "[A] mosh pit of a comic-book movie that dares you to dive into its anarchy."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (04/29/2010)

"KICK-ASS is an intelligent meta-comic that deploys familiar superheroic tropes and archetypes to explore all that is fractured and flawed in our decidedly non-super humanity."
Sight and Sound - Sight and Sound Critic (05/01/2010)

4 stars out of 5 -- "All good, teen-savvy, pertinent stuff, spiked with laughs....Cage is a deadpan delight..."

The Blu-Ray is a must have.

Created: 18/11/10
It is not a kid's "super hero" movie, but an over-18 year old film about a man who uses the super hero idea for revenge sake (i.e. Big Daddy). How he trains his daughter to be a highly lethal partner who sees death as a comics role (i.e. Hit Girl). And finally, Kick Ass who wants to right wrong, but does not have the "right stuff" to do it. The upshot is that this film is original, very funny, and quite dark. Chloe Moretz steals every scene and is amazing as Hit Girl. The Blu-Ray is a must have. The video quality is so clear and the colors are very vibrant. The audio quality immediately gets your attention. The only caution is to not buy this movie if profanity offends you. Unfortunately, the title and controversy of Hit Girl killing spree probably lowered the box office take this movie deserves. It's a keeper.

Fun and enjoyable movie!

I decided to buy this movie after seeing "Let Me In", with Chloe-Grace Moretz. When I had first seen the trailer for Kick-Ass, I thought it was for kids until I started watching it. I had to check the box and it was rated R. I enjoyed Kick-Ass much more than I ever thought I would. I liked the characters and it almost seemed like the movie was set in a different world. Some people might say it was unrealistic and of course it was a little but it had enough of reality in it to make it enjoyable and not completely unbelievable. It had underlying themes and meanings to it but altogether it was fun to watch. It's a good thing I'm not as young as the characters because I probably would have a costume and a superhero name already made.

Kick Ass, a great movie for anyone who isn't a limp dic

This is a heavy action film is filled with great humor and now, reality as in Columbus, OH, there is a Kick-ass type super hero. How can you not like this movie. The young girl is a super role model for any young lady (well, guys talk trash talk, maybe girls can too). You can't go wrong with a great movie.

The pre-views did this movie no justice. Yes, as a teenager I was an avid comic book fan & I watch the super-hero movies. This was unlike any other. A total original. An ordinary teenager with a dream, not unlike many of us who wish they could be a superhero. But he didnt let reality, lack of any fighting skills or common sense stop him. He bought a costume, assumed an identity &amp went out to stop some bad people. The results were disastrous & hilarious. The introduction of Big Daddy & Hit Girl was like watching an alternate reality. Their intro into the action was jaw dropping. If you like action Watch this movie. Yes it is violent. My wife couldnt believe the high level of it. But if you liked the movie "Mean Guns" youll find it acceptable. There were issues with the little girl using profanity. It fit with the tone of the movie. I bought this movie on blu-ray even though I don't own a hi-def TV or a blu-ray player. I brought it over to my brothers place & watched it a second time with my brother & cousin who both had not seen it before. They both found it awesome. I think you will too!

Good and funny.

The movie was funny and has some suprises. Not a great movie but good overall. The only thing I didn't like was that pretty much all through the movie Hit Girl is kicking everyones ass until the end where she gets her ass kicked..
