Publisher's Note

A riveting historical narrative of the heart-stopping events surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the first work of history from mega-bestselling author Bill O'Reilly

The anchor of The O'Reilly Factor recounts one of the most dramatic stories in American history—how one gunshot changed the country forever. In the spring of 1865, the Civil War finally comes to an end after a series of incredibly bloody battles. President Abraham Lincoln's generous terms for Robert E. Lee's surrender are devised to fulfill Lincoln's dream of healing a divided nation, with the former Confederates allowed to reintegrate into American society. One man and his band of murderous accomplices, perhaps reaching into the highest ranks of the U.S. government, are not appeased.

In the midst of the patriotic celebrations in Washington, D.C., John Wilkes Booth—charismatic ladies' man and impenitent racist—murders Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theater. A furious manhunt ensues and Booth immediately becomes the country's most wanted fugitive. Lafayette C. Baker, a brilliant but enigmatic New York detective and former Union spy, unravels the string of clues leading to Booth, while federal forces track his accomplices. The thrilling chase ends in a fiery shootout and a series of court-ordered executions—including that of the first woman ever executed by the U.S. government, Mary Surratt. With an unforgettable cast of characters, vivid historical detail, and page-turning action, Killing Lincoln is history that reads like a thriller.

Industry Reviews
"Cable-news talking head O'Reilly . . . and historian Dugard . . . serve up a sensational, true-crime account of one of the most shocking murders in American history. . . . An entertaining tale that neither adds to the vast bulk of Lincoln scholarship nor challenges the established theories of Booth's plot and the subsequent trial of the conspirators."

Superior book about the Assassination of Lincoln

I am a retired teacher of 30 years with a great interest in the wars that our country has fought. I usually read historical non-fiction about WWI-Iraq/Afghanistan. I have read some really good books about the Civil War,but never have I read such a thoroughly researched book with so many details about the Lincoln Assassination. I could not put the book down and read into the wee hours of the morning even though I knew what the outcome would be. Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard did a phenomenal job of developing each character to the point that I felt like I knew that person. I finished the book and put it down with regret because I did not want it to be over. When I finish reading a really good book, I feel like I have just lost a good friend as the book and I have developed a relationship over the reading time. I must say that this is the BEST book ever written about Lincoln, the conspiracy, and the whole sadness of the death of our 16th president. It makes me wonder if reconstruction would have been handled in a different way so that the South was not punished as it was. I am a Native Texan which makes me a Southerner and we refer to the war as the War of Northern Aggression. I was a freshman in college when President John F, Kennedy was murdered in our great state and we bore the shame of it happening in Dallas, although be it by a man from Louisiana. I will never forget the horror and sadness of the following weeks as we watched the television and cried so many tears. That is how I felt as I was reading the book, KILLING LINCOLN. I highly recommend this book to everyone even if you aren't an avid reader as I am. It is just a magnificent glimpse into our beloved country's history.

Excellent book! I've read some of the best selling classics recently, and this is right up there with them. For me, the civil war part dragged on a little, but once we got back to Lincoln and Booth, I couldn't put it down! I felt like I was back there in 1865, riding the dirt streets of Washington on my horse!

I got this book for my mother's 81st birthday. She read it and then began passing around the family. Whenever you speak with her now all she wants to talk about is Killing Lincoln. The book is excellent. This is the kind of book that makes history relevant. It also brings people from hundreds of years ago into a perspective that we can see what they would be like today. It also makes a great gift for an 81 year old bibliophile.

Good and easy read for anyone wanting to learn more about the assassination of one of the greatest presidents in our history. A few historical errors in the book but not enough to make it irrelevant. Overall, I would recommend this as a book that any history nut would enjoy reading.
